Brooklyn Kurtz Merricks pounded a home run as a part of 4 for 4 performance Wednesday, powering the Newark Catholic softball team to a 15-6 victory against visiting DeSales.
Kurtz Merricks also doubled twice, scoring three runs and racking up seven RBIs. Jahni Whitney homered, driving in three runs, and Veronica Bailey added three hits and five runs and Emma Lohri two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Green Wave (1-1).
Aly Rothweiler struck out three and allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Baliegh Torrens tripled and doubled as a part of a 4 for 4 afternoon, fueling Utica in a 9-4 victory against visiting Northmor in the season opener.
Torrens knocked in three runs, and Emily Meyers matched her with three RBIs, and Meyers, Cheyenne Smith and Kenzie Fletcher recorded two hits each. Kiersten Hull struck out seven and allowed one earned run in a three-hitter.
Emory Whisner homered twice and Alexa Gilliam once for Licking Valley in a 12-3 victory against Marshall (WI) in Tennessee.
Gilliam totaled four hits, two runs and three RBIs. Taylor Penick added two doubles and four runs and D’Neya Dennis two hits, including a triple, a run and an RBI for the Panthers (1-2).
Tori Baughman struck out 10 in a six-hitter. Earlier, Whisner struck out six and allowed three hits and no earned runs in a 1-0 loss to Milford.
Visiting Pickerington North scored five runs in the final two innings, sending Newark to a 9-6 defeat.
Calyn Music hit a three-run home run for the Wildcats (0-3). Tyana Spears added a double, a run and two RBIs, Maygen Woody two hits, including a double, and Lexi Shanaberg a hit, a run and an RBI.
Visiting River Valley scored two in the top of the eighth inning, sending Granville to a 14-12 defeat.
Megan Lodge piled up four hits, four runs and four RBIs, homering and doubling for the Blue Aces (2-1), who scored four in the bottom of the seventh inning after the Vikings scored seven in the top of the inning. Avary King added four hits and three RBIs, Sophia Patena and Sydney Cottrill two hits and two runs apiece and Aubrey Lackey a double and two RBIs.
Beckett Long's four goals led Granville in a 17-9 loss to visiting Pickerington North in Tuesday's season opener.
Bobby Higginbotham added two goals, and Matt Rosen, Woody Struthers and Titus Terebuh one each for the Blue Aces. Rosen also picked up five ground balls, and Davis Williamson made six saves.
