I hate the new onside kick rule and don't understand the need for it at all and the wedge rule seems from out of left field too. I don't remember there ever being any kind of problem at all in these areas much less a continual one that warrants a change being made.

The QB/knee rule I'm less adamant about. I think the rules have gone too far in trying to protect the QB(all the helmet related rules came about because of Young and Aikman I'm pretty sure. Chris Miller lost all but one of his marbles and I doubt the league would have done anything because of his career getting cut short.) but in this case, I think they should have started with this rule.

Lineman are protected from this type of hit too and I think it's the one area where I would say go ahead and police those types of hits. In the grasp, the slide, any touching of the general area of the head, etc. are all pussification. Protecting the knees though? I've got no problem with that. It's just unfortunate that the rule is piled on top of all the other stuff. It changes the whole perception of what it is.

Where is the data that suggests that when Brady went down, The Patriots failed to exist as a money making machine?
The hardest evidence is in the money they lost by not making the playoffs. But, I would bet that they'd be less popular in the years to come if Brady retired today. Plus, I'll bet Cassell never sells as many jerseys as Brady has.

I'd also say that it's not individual stars that get injured that hurts the league, rather it's the whole of them. If Brady disappears for a year, not really much of a blip on the radar. But if six star QBs go down for the count it might start taking a toll.

Again, I'm not sure I agree with the rules because I think it hurts the integrity of the game, but I understand why they're doing it.

I knew someone would bring this up.. They won 11 fricking games!
The Patriots missing the playoffs was a complete anomaly.

Do you think they would have made the playoffs with Brady?

I don't see why it's so hard for some of you to comprehend. QB's are what make or break a team, so the NFL is doing everything it can to protect it's most valuable and vulnerable asset.

Brady is the Pats highest paid player. No wonder they want him protected. Duh.

Everyone acts like QB's just started getting hurt in this game, As far as I know they were subjected to the same concussions and broken bones throughout the last 100 years of the game.

If a team wants to protect their multimillion dollar poster boy, spend accordingly on your offensive line imo.

i heard about this rule today and it really ticked me off...hell, if a defender can't dive to make a sack after falling down...then why should a WR be allowed to dive to catch a pass in the endzone after falling down. It is all about the new proclaimed golden boy Tom Brady getting hurt in similar fashion...oh woes us, we should all give extra protection to the 'golden girl'. It is football damn it, a contact sport.

You seem to be completely ignoring the fact that the size and speed, along with the violence of the game is very different from 50 years ago.

Bottom line is, the league is doing what is best for it's players, if all that you're interested in is watching a guy get beat up, why don't you just watch a UFC match? I'd much rather see the best players on the field as much as possible.

Wrong. This rule was being discussed when Carson Palmer got injured a couple years back, Brady was just another premier qb injured by a defender going for his knees in a vulnerable position.

Oh I'm sorry, are QB's immune to getting bigger/stronger/faster?

Leave the fricking game alone.

If a aging statue for a QB like Warner can play every down for a whole season, plus playoffs AND the SB.. Maybe Tommy boy needs a quicker release.

Sigh...they can train 24/7 as much as they want, bottom line is, there is no current way of strengthening knee ligaments, which is what is injured by diving at a qb's knees.

"Leave the fricking game alone."

Good idea, why don't we bring back chop blocks, Deacon Jones head slaps and leather helmets? Luckily the NFL is in the hands of forward thinkers who are smart enough to protect their most valuable asset.
