Generally people pick teams because of personal connections, ie they live or lived in the area or there is something about the team that they like.
In may case, I lived in Ohio and later San Francisco; so unless they are playing the Suns I root for their teams. This year was a heck of lot more fun doing that in past years. I actually used to root for Dallas when Don Nelson was coach because I really like him and love his style.
It took me a while to warm up to the Suns after moving here, but some of it was that they managed to turn a 59 win team into a 41 win team the first full season I was here. 95-96.
It's easier to attach to a team that is successful, but it's important that you believe in the management of the team. I have never been a Cardinals fan because I don't believe in the ownership. It's not a case of not winning, I was 49er's fan before they got really good back in 80 bcause I liked the direction they showed and the way they played. Of course the fact that they went from six wins to a Super Bowl the following year helped.
I'll ignore a really bad team (Coyotes) because losing and cluelessness is too hard to handle. But I won't get into a team just because they are successful. Front runners who like teams like the Yankees (but don't live in New York) always turned me off.
Some franchises just turn me off. I don't like the Pistons, even though I lived in Detroit briefly, after what Chuck Daly did to the NBA. I rooted against the Lakers in that series, but generally I hate the grabbing fouling style of play they embody.
I'm not sure I can make sense of all that. If I was living in New Orleans, I'd get behind the Hornets. They have some really good players and are worthy of support. But that's just me.
