The official deal is still close lipped, but reportedly the Phils will send Pat Burrell and Cash Considerations to Philadelphia for Johnny Estrada and a minor league prospect.

I'll try to post more info as I find it out.

Not to mention another former Moorad guy. His contract runs through '08 as well so I hope the Phillies are eating a lot of it.

What does this do to our OF? The way I look at it Burrell will play LF, Quentin in RF, Byrnes or Young in CF? I doubt we talk Byrnes in to a platoon role with Young, but maybe I'm wrong. Nonetheless I think this is a stupid move and I would have been much happier with getting prospects for Estrada.

Weak.Sauce.

So Burrell is going to play where? Or should I say: What prospect is he going to block?

They better be throwing in a boatload of cash.

Reports are anywhere from $8-$18 million. Philly fans seem pretty pissed about this deal which makes me feel a little bit better. But here's what I gathered from what I read over on their forum:

- Above average hitter who will get good numbers but looks at a lot of 3rd strikes.

- Has a chronic foot injury which may inhibit his ability to roam the outfield down the road.

- Overall liked by fans and don't want to see him go

- He will get you 30/100 each year

He's owed $13M in '07 and $14M in '08. :barf:

For those who don't know- Burrell is due $27 MILLION OVER THE NEXT 2 YEARS. There better be tons of money coming our way.

While I'm at it, screw Estrada. He was very productive for us but he can take his lame ass attitude to Philly

I would say thats a good description. However, I thought it was well known that Philly fans were sick of Burrell (Kind of the same way we were with Shawn Green). They shouldn't be pissed now because they will more then likely give Soriano whatever he wants and he'll takeover LF. Burrell is a low energy guy like Green and JD Drew. He always makes a couple trips to the DL every season.

Like Ryan said, whose experience will he be taking away from. Does this mean we aren't bringing Byrnes back (We better bring him back)

Burrell has a full no trade clause as well. Asumming he has waived it?

Most likely. If Philly has made several efforts to trade him I doubt he would want to stay around. Not to mention he was one of Moorad's clients so I'm sure they still like one another. If I were him I'd probably bolt Philly to play in Arizona. AZ can be an attractive place after being stuck in a city like that for a long time.

If they pay 10 to 12 million of the remaining 23 thats not a bad deal at all. Plus maybe you move either Byrnes or Young as part of a deal for a pitcher. I trust Josh Byrnes on a deal like this. Burrell adds power to a lineup lacking it and if the dbacks can turn around and make another deal for a pitcher and solidify the rotation this team looks like a contender for the NL West.

I read a few months ago in a doctors office magazine that Byrnes was one of the best Free Agent pickup by any club last season based on cost/production. He was a hell of a pick up regardless of his defensive short comings

Trade Young back to the White Sox. Supposedly Williams thinks he made a mistake trading him, especially after Brian Anderson flopped in CF for the White Sox. I have seen a couple different reports that Brandon McCarthy or Mark Buehrle are on the block. I'll take either, it would take more then Young though. Obvioulsy I might change my mind if it's Young and another elite prospect

Yeah the White Sox would be a good trade partner and honestly I'm not sure that it would take that much more than Chris Young with the way Anderson played in center last year for them. It may be Young and a tier two pitching prospect. I think if this deal goes down Byrnes has a second deal in the works to clear the clogged OF. That or Davanon is going to turn down his player option and Chris Young will be the backup OF.

Puke, puke, puke. Why does this organization have such a hard on for mediocre power hitters? (Glaus, Green, Sexson). When we won the WS it was because we had 2 Cy Young candidates. Lets try to repeat that formula, get another ace to pair with Webby. Let the young guys play and screw up this upcoming year, and then in 2 years we should challenge for a pennant.

Did you forget about the power in that lineup when they won the world seiries? They did have an OF who hit 57 home runs that year and other fantastic offensive numbers for the rest of the guys. It's a matter of finding a balance between solid pitching and timely offense. This lineup lacked a power bat of any kind last year and it was obvious. Burrell is extremely underrated offensively and unlike the Sexon deal you aren't selling off half the team to get him, you are getting rid of a malcontent at catcher. Also Burrell could spell Conor Jackson at 1B at times too. I think this is typical for a GM of Byrnes' type. Find the undervalued player and pick him up while making the other team pick up a large chunk of the tab. He is going to be significantly cheaper than any other bat on the free agent market plus it still leaves open room for getting two solid starters to fill out the rotation.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Burrell is a power hitter?????? He provides a bit of power to this lineup but I wouldn't consider him a "power hitter." He has only had 100+ RBI's in 2 seasons, has averaged 26 HR's and 92 RBI's in his 7 year career. He gets on base a good amount (.362 career OBP, .389 and .388 the last 2 seasons) but if you ask me, he's Shawn Green all over again.

Also a career .258 hitter

Depending on how much money they throw in. If we don't get a good amount of money back and it affects which pitchers we're going after, I'll be pissed

I think if they get 10-12 million that makes this trade a good one. That would leave the Dbacks on the hook for 15-17 million over two years. I think a move like this would show that the front office and Byrnes especially feels that the young guys are ready to compete for the division in 2007 instead of 2008.

I'll believe it when I see it. We have been duped several times on how much money exchanges hands in trades that invlove us. We had to give more then we thought in both the Green and Vazquez trades. I'll wait for the confirmation

This may not be a done deal. From what I've heard, this was from a broadcast on WIP early this morning. However, I've heard conflicting reports on what was actually discussed, and the broadcast was several hours ago yet there is no mention of this trade anywhere else. Until there's a link, I'm going to change the thread title to rumor, since it doesn't appear to be final.

Agreed. I've been checking ESPN.com and MLB.com (both have extensive trade and FA coverage) and also checked the Philadelphia Inquirer and none say anything about Burrell. Just went to http://www.610wip.com/ and it had nothing as well.

We have to remember this is Philly sports radio we're dealing with. Their known for blowing smoke up peoples ...........

It is all rumors. I say no way Byrnes makes this deal. If by chance he does, I will then put him in the Joe G. Jr. club.
