Browns could trade down from No. 3
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

For the Dayton Daily News

With the NFL draft a little more than a month away, we may start to hear of some movement at the top of the order.

Two teams picking in the top five — the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns — are willing to entertain suitors looking to move into the second and third overall selection spots. Although no candidates have emerged, there are some rumblings around the league. Rumor has it that the Arizona Cardinals could be looking to move into the top five, increasing their chances of having a shot at one of the Auburn backs, Ronnie Brown or Cadillac Williams. They may be eyeing Cleveland to move up the board.

The Browns could go in a number of directions should they stay put at No. 3: linebacker, quarterback, offensive line and the dark horse, wide receiver.

The Browns have scheduled a visit with South Carolina WR Troy Williamson, who is due in Cleveland within the next two weeks. The third spot may be a bit high for the speedster, but not if the club should decide to trade down. Another prospect who intrigues the Browns is Florida State defensive end/outside linebacker Eric Moore.

According to a source close to the situation, members of the Browns organization flew out to meet with Moore during the Hula Bowl. Moore is projected to go anywhere between the second and third round. The Bengals, sitting in the 17th slot, have been long-rumored to be targeting Georgia safety Thomas Davis, a ferocious hitter and difference-maker on defense. However, the Bengals are not alone in their possible interest in Davis. The New Orleans Saints, who own the 16th pick, are very interested in the All-American.

The only knock on Davis is that some scouts have doubts about his ability to drop back into pass coverage. Davis ran between a 4.58 and 4.65 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine last month while weighing 230 pounds, thus raising questions about him playing safety due to a lack of speed. It is almost certain that Davis will be converted to outside linebacker in the pros.

One prospect the Bengals could have their eye on in the later rounds is South Carolina middle linebacker Marcus Lawrence. The team is believed to be enamored with the linebacker's versatility. Bengals scouts watched him very closely at the school's pro day on Wednesday.

Hmmm. Let's get this straight. Dennis Green and Rod Graves have publically stated they want to add draft choices not subtract them.

At #8, they have 3 shots at a RB and 2 - 3 shots at quality corners. Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards are projected to go high, and there's significant buzz that Rodgers and Alex Smith will be taken in the top 8.

So they'd want to trade up 3 rungs to make sure they landed a RB?

Sounds more like the figment of the imagination of some Ohio sportswriter suffering from snowy season cabin fever and having too much time on his/her hands.

Never say never - and maybe it would be smart to keep that option open & wait until Cleveland is on the clock to see who's left on the board - but if I were Rod or Dennis, I'd pass on this one.

If we trade up it will be for one of the two QBs. There is way too much depth at RB in this draft to waste picks to trade up. Same with CB. Other than that, the draft does not have much quality in need postions for the Cards.

My take, stay put and pick Rolle or Jones- RB Arrington in 2nd round.

This makes sense for the Browns, because they want someone like Derrick Johnson or Shawne Merriman, but are really too high to justify those picks. If the Cards want to stay away from Benson, it makes sense, but I don't know if the price (last year it was a high 2nd round pick to move up ONE SPOT) is right for the Cards to move up.

Think the Browns would trade us straight-up?

I agree, but you never know.

This was rumored even before the start of free agency. It was rumored that the draft was so weak that it wouldn't cost a lot to move up, and that the Browns offered to swap picks in exchange for LJ. However, with the recent work-outs I doubt that offer is this on the table (if it ever was).

You can't compare it to last year. The Browns not only paid for moving up one spot, but also paid the Lions for passing on Winslow, who reportedly was #1 on their board. That's why they paid that much.

 I never heard that. EVERY report I read said that the Lions wanted Roy Williams, and were going to take him, but the Browns called and offered this massive package to trade with them. THE MEDIA thought that the Lions might want Winslow, but everything I read said after the draft said that the Lions were eyeing Williams from the beginning.

Do you have something that says otherwise?

you might have to register but its easy. the story basically says we might trade picks with them for one of the auburn kids, its just a rumor but i was wondering if someone in the big az heard anything about trading down.

It would really be out of character for the Cards to trade up and pay more money. Just something they rarely do.

Maybe I remember it wrong, but thought most reports had Winslow going to the Lions before the draft.

The only player I see the Cardinals trading up for is Ronnie Brown. That being said, I don't want to see us trade away any of our picks this year, with the exception of our #8 of course. If we could package our #8 with LJ and/or a mid-late round draft pick of next year I would be satisfied with that. I have a feeling that there are quite a few teams that are willing to trade up to get Brown, so it depends on what other teams are offering as well as who the Browns are targeting.

I recall the Redskins told KW 2.0 that they would take him, that is why he was so upset.

Neither this rumor nor the Anquan Boldin trade rumor have any legs. Neither makes sense and both originated from out of town media. It does give us something to talk about.

I could see Green flipping with Cleveland in round #2 if it would mean we could get Baas. I'd flip their #35 for our #44 and Shelton.

I agree the Cards would only move up for Brown and they are convinced he won't get by the Dolphins. They also see it likely the Niners will trade out of the one slot.

Who wants to trade IN? It's been quite public the 49ers don't want the first pick, but nobody else seems to either, so it's going to be difficult for them to trade out if nobody wants the pick.

Maybe someone who REALLY wants Ronnie Brown or Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards, or maybe someone fell in love with Alex Smith?

Maybe it's a money issue. Cleveland can't justify taking D.J. or Shawn at #3 and paying them top 3 money, so they or looking to move down a few slots take the guy they want at the price they feel they deserve. I think that's the obvious, So they are talking to Arizona about moving up to the 3rd spot because they can afford the pick and get a guy that's possibly rated #1 on their draft board.
Maybe Cleveland isn't asking that much for the drop. The Cards aren't that interested in moving up 5 spot but maybe they would if the price wasn't that steep. I can see this being the most likely scenerio. The Cards may not be interested in moving up but if Cleveland isn't asking much and just wants to get out of the Top 3 I could see us doing that. If we could dump someone like Thompson, Shelton, or Clement and move up 5 spots I would do that. Just a Thought

The only way I could see us trading up to get a guy we wanted would be if we offered one of our 3 top trade-rumor guys (Shelton, Clement or Thompson) in order to move up a few rungs.

I don't see us giving up draft picks or flipping a high pick in a round for a later one.

Note - Quite possibly, some of the earlier reports - we were in discussions with teams about working out trades - may have been little more than merely establishing value for LJ, Anthony or Ray in case we wanted to include at least one of them in a draft day trade.

The local media hardly know anything about the Cardinals. So it is really unlikely that anyone from out of town would have any clue whatsoever about what Arizona is doing.
