Walter McCarty
CelticsSuns
Jan. 26 - The Celtics and Suns are close to completing a trade that would send McCarty to Phoenix in exchange for a second-round draft pick.

The Boston Herald reports the Celtics were just awaiting word from the Suns. Director of basketball operations Danny Ainge did not comment. McCarty, a Celtics' fan favorite for seven seasons, wants more playing time and he's not getting it in coach Doc Rivers' rotation. "I'm very excited if it does happen," McCarty told the Herald about the trade. "The Suns are a team that's playing really well right now, and it would be a chance to win. I'm very excited. I think it's close and I just hope it follows through."

Karl Malone

Retirement?Jan. 26 - Even as Malone reportedly nears a retirement announcement within the next two weeks, teams are campaigning to talk him into joining them this season.

The January 26 Arizona Republic reports Suns Chairman Jerry Colangelo told KTAR-AM that his team is interested. Colangelo spoke to Malone's agent Dwight Manley last week, and Manley told him and various media outlets that Malone, 41, is leaning toward retirement. Suns president and GM Bryan Colangelo said in the Republic regarding Malone: "We are doing everything we can to turn every stone to find a player and take advantage of this opportunity. That might reinforce what we're doing." Speculation has been that if Malone does return, he would join the Spurs. The Heat also are interested.

Elden Campbell
JazzNets?
Pistons?
Jan. 25 - The Pistons sent Campbell to the Jazz for salary cap purposes as part of the Carlos Arroyo trade last week. The Jazz were expected to waive Campbell immediately, but apparently they are trying to negotiate a buyout, the Detroit News reports. Campbell is owed $2.2 million on his $4.4 million contract. When some other team picks up Campbell, he's expected to get a contract worth a prorated $1.3 million and the Jazz want some sort of benefit for that, the News reports. The Nets have expressed interest in Campbell. But if he clears waivers, the Pistons might re-sign him.

Paul Pierce
Celtics?Jan. 24 - Celtics GM Danny Ainge claims he doesn't want to trade Pierce. Pierce's agent, Jeff Schwartz, claims Pierce doesn't want to be traded. So, Insider's Chad Ford wonders, why have the hottest trade rumors in Boston all centered on a Pierce trade? To a certain extent, fans and talk radio have turned on Pierce to the point that one source in Boston now claims it's inevitable he'll be traded – if not by the Feb. 24 trade deadline then in the summer. Pierce has started all 40 games and is averaging 21.6 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Gary Payton
CelticsMavericks?
Trail Blazers?
SuperSonics?
Jan. 26 - The Celtics might be closer to trading Payton, the Jan. 26 Boston Herald reports.

Payton came to the Celtics reluctantly in a summer trade with the Lakers and has maintained he would rather play for a Western Conference title contender. His mother also has been in California for chemotherapy treatment and Payton wants to be closer to his family. The Herald reports sources close to director of basketball operations Danny Ainge say he is considering possible offers for Payton. It's possible a first-round pick might be enough to send Payton to his fourth team since he left Seattle in February, 2003. Last month, a report surfaced that the Mavericks were interested. This season, Payton has expressed interest in the Trail Blazers and has said he would like to finish his career as a SuperSonic.

If it's playing time that McCarty is worried about, why would the Suns be a good fit for him? Between our starting five, Jim Jackson, Barbosa, and Hunter, I don't really foresee a lot of time for him.

Edit: He turns 31 in Febuary. Maybe we're adding him for more Veteran leadership for the play-offs. I would feel more comfortable bringing him off the bench than a guy like Lampe, Cabarkapa, or Vroman (not that that is an issue anymore).

Could be just a cover since he was a fan favorite. I don't think he fits into the Celtics plans and could be a nice fit for the Suns if someone gets into foul trouble or it's a blow out.

Anybody know how to cut-and-paste on Insider? I've wanted to post stuff I've seen there on this board but I can't figure out how to do it.

You could always do a print screen and paste it.

i would not be suprised if we went for a run at payton this offseason. he'd be a perfect fit behind Nash at the backup PG position.

also, when the hell is Toronto going to buyout Zo. he'd pretty much put us over the top IMO. he'd give us what he are needing downlow...a veteran tough guy who can both score and rebound and play some pretty damn good D.

Amare/Hunter/Vosk
Marion/Zo/McCarty
Q/Jimmy
JJ/Jimmy
Nash/JJ/Barbs

or with is little shuffling:

Zo/Amare/Hunter
Amare/McCarty
Marion/Q
JJ/Jimmy J
Nash/JJ/Barbs

that is a team with a STRONG BENCH. no drop-off ANYWHERE except for some rebounding at the PF and assists at the PG.

Don't forget Bo he still brings D, Rebounding and Hustel to the team.

You think Alonzo Mourning isn't playing because of Toronto? Don't fool yourself, Alonzo Mourning isn't playing because he's still injured. The stuff you are saying is the exact same thing New Jersey fans said last year--and look what happened.

I'd be OK with a second round pick for this guy. He's hardly the rebounding presence we need, but he can play some decent defense. He's a hustle scorer. We wouldn't have to run plays for him. Kinda like a VERY Poor Man's Marion! :D

From Dime site:

Walter McCarty - # 0 - Forward - 6' 8" - 230lbs
Wed Jan 26 2005 - Several sources report that the Celtics are very close to sending Walter McCarty to Phoenix for a second-round draft pick. McCarty still has plenty to offer at 31, but has been squeezed from the Celtics' rotation. It's not like he'd suddenly be worth picking up with the Suns, though.

Jim Jackson said he was working out with Mourning and Mourning looks good. Besides, his most recent injury isn't related to his kidney issue (although the slow comeback might be).

If Mourning were to be healthy and somehow find his way on the Suns, he could really make a difference. I saw only one game of his this year (can't remember the opponent), but he was a force.

McCarty fora 2nd? Wow! What an awesome minor move. Suns deepen the bench while keeping up the ability to play their style with a big hybrid forward. Let's see.... CJ/Lampe/Vroman for Jackson/McCarty. That is just friggin AWESOME!!!!!!

Nash-JJ-Q-Marion-Stat

Jackson-McCarty-Hunter-Barbosa-Bo-Shirley-Parker

All of a sudden, we are actually a deep team! We are at least a good 10 deep, but I really like Parker's quickness, agressiveness and confidence, so as he is groomed along, we are really 11 deep. I know nothing of Shirley....

Minutes:

32-35 apiece for starters, 20 for Jackson, 15 for McCarty, 12 for Hunter, 10 for Barbosa, and split 12-13 among the last 3. Perfect....

i think Mourning originally went out because he was tired and was breaking down someone. he needed a break. BUT, i also think that their were hidden intentions behind it.

he's been hoping for a buyout ALL SEASON from someone...first NJ and now Toronto, so he can play for a playoff team. now, if he wasnt holding up all that well for the first 30 games of the season or so, why would he then come back and play for a team that doesnt have a chance, when their is still a strong possibility of being bought out. if he had started back up again in late december or whatever, he'd probably once again have to take some time off later in the season. what use is a guy to a playoff team who's not going to be available during the stretch run. NOTHING.

this guy still wants to be strong and healthy in may, and the best way to do that is NOT PLAY. it makes complete sense....why waste energy for nothing? he's a smart guy.

Mourning looked good at NJ when the Suns played there. He didn't play a lot of minutes but I thought at the time he could definitely help.

Gezz. I forgot about Voskuhl in my rotation. We have 13 guys on our active roster. Either we do another 2-1 trade (Voskuhl/Shirley for Mourning?) or Parker is done after his first 10-day....

Maybe that's why Shirley was given a 2-year contract. Now he is tradeable....

IF he's healthy, and he'll play for us for cheap, then I'm for getting Mourning, I just don't have the confidence you guys have in him.

OK. For argument's sake, let's say a trade of Voskuhl/Barbosa/Shirley for Mourning/2nd goes down and the Suns sign Malone as well. If Parker is signed for the remainder, we have a 12 man roster of:

Nash-JJ-Q-Marion-Stat

Jackson-Malone-Mourning-McCarty-Hunter-Parker-Bo

I think half the teams in the NBA would start Parker-Jackson-McCarty-Malone-Mourning and that would be our bench. Maybe I'm dreaming a bit, but what if?

Why trade for Mourning if we can just wait out Toronto until he's bought out? Besides, I don't think we can even trade Shirley right now anyway.

Vosku/Shirley for Mourning doesnt work by any means. and even if it did, i wouldnt trade for him by any means. chances are, he hurt our cap situation by not being able to fulfil his contract and and be a sitting duck on the injured list.

BTW how much does Shirley make this year? if we could sign a boughtout Mourning we could package Voskul/Barbs/Shirley/Zarko exemption/second rounder for Payton.

I think that the Zarko exemption is being used for the McCarty acquisition. That's why we are only trading a 2nd rounder and not sending any salary....

Today in the paper they mentioned that we are not likely to sign Parker after his 10 day contract expires.

I seriously doubt many teams in the NBA would start Parker considering he wasn't even on an NBA roster about a week ago, nor would they start McCarty. So to answer your question...Yes you are dreaming. :p

But the other three could all start elsewhere if that makes you feel a little better.

We will only have 12 guys if we get McCarty. Parker is going to be dropped.
