Should somebody be promoted to HC from the current staff (and the odds of that happening are extremely slim considering it would take an Elite 8 run or Livengood whiffing on his first thirty candidates) it will be Mike Dunlap. Russ Pennell is head coach in name only. Dunlap draws the plays, scouts the opposition, runs the practices, and teaches the scheme. He's the guy in charge.

I don't know crap but I'm enjoying watching this team. If both AZ schools could make the tournament, I'd be thrilled. Better yet, if both AZ schools could also finish ahead of UCLA, life on earth would be good.

Both teams make the tournament? Maybe.

One or both finish ahead of UCLA? No freaking way.

Welp looks like Russ Pennell is the new top guy at Grand Canyon. I'm a bit surprised he went to a D2 school, he must really like living in AZ. I figured NAU would try to get him but perhaps they're happy with their current guy.

Also I didn't know GCU was opening a 6K seat arena and soon moving up to D1 hoops, interesting, I'll have to go check out some of their games.

EDIT: Any guesses what conference GCU would try to get in? It seems to me the WCC would make the most sense since its made up of small, religious affiliated schools.

NAU just extended long-time coach Mike Adras, who was Ben Howland top assistant at NAU before Howland went to Pitt.

GCU can NOT move up at this time - there is a moratorium on moving up that expires in 2011, although it might be extended. At the earliest, GCU would be a full D-I member in 2016.

^You sure about that? All these articles are claiming GCU could join a D1 conference in two years and play in the big dance in 4 (though that obviously would be extremely improbable).

100% certain.

I follow this very closely. Moratorium on moving up now, until 2011, and it is a FIVE year transition period, not four.

Good move by GCU signing Pennell. I think I will be going to their games.

By the way I graduated from GCU.

I am a little shocked he did not go to a D1 program somewhere. Maybe he just doesn't want to leave the state.
