The New York Giants will be getting a boost in their deep passing game with the addition of free agent quarterback Russell Wilson.
In 2024, Big Blue was tied with New England for last in the NFL in completions of 20 yards or greater (34), but now with Wilson under center, they can expect to see more success on their downfield attempts this season.
Wilson completed 40 passes of over 20 yards in 2024 in just 336 attempts, grading out as the highest passer on such throws in the NFL last year.
The Giants had four quarterbacks attempt 591 passes in 2024, completing 366 of them, but only 34 went for 20 yards or more.
The Giants have a solid, capable receiving corps led by Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton and Wan'Dale Robinson, and also have other options such as tight end Theo Johnson, speedy wideout Jalin Hyatt, and recently-signed Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who could benefit from Wilson's deep accuracy.
"Watching this freak of an athlete in Nabers," Wilson told reporters on his introductory Zoom call after signing his contract on Wednesday afternoon. "This guy, when he touches the ball, he may score every single time. He's been exciting. Got to talk to him along the way. He's fired up and we've had a lot of good conversations so far.
"Just really excited to get to work. Excited about the young guys, guys like Theo (Johnson) and what he can do and the experienced guys like Darius (Slayton) and his ability to get down the field and make plays.
"I think I talked to Jalin Hyatt today a little bit too. He's a guy that's been untapped in terms of what knows he's capable of. It's just been a really good process. And there are many others. Wan'Dale Robinson, he is like a running back. Every time he touches the ball, he's hard to tackle, his ability to make people miss, his ability to get away from guys and his ability to escape. I've played with some guys that before."
Wilson could just be that big-play arm the Giants have been searching for. Now it's up to the coaching staff to allow him to let it fly.
