Spurs notebook: Bowen downplays collision on court

Web Posted: 04/10/2008 12:24 AM CDT

Mike Monroe
Express-News

Spurs forward Bruce Bowen has been involved in his share of controversial incidents over the course of his career, but he didn't think a routine collision with Suns star Amare Stoudemire was one.

"Much ado about nothing," Bowen said after Stoudemire reacted angrily when Bowen ran into a screen he had set for Steve Nash.

Stoudemire accused Bowen of hitting him with an elbow with 3:28 remaining in the Suns' 96-79 victory at the AT&T Center on Wednesday.

Stoudemire took a few steps in Bowen's direction after a timeout was called and players were walking back to their respective benches after the two players bumped near mid-court. Coaches from both teams walked on the court to prevent tempers from getting out of hand.

"It definitely wasn't a basketball play on his part, and I reacted" Stoudemire said. "And I definitely didn't appreciate it. I let him know about it."

Asked if he would be Bowen's friend on the MySpace Web site, Stoudemire responded negatively at first, then changed his mind.

"I probably would," he said. "But just to get his address. Then I might go visit him at his home."

I wanna see Shaq nail an elbow on him during a screen. Lets see if he says "muchado about nothing" when he's laying in the hospital with 8 broken ribs.

Nice quote. I'm glad Amare despises Bowen because he seems like one of those guys that will let that amp up his play.

If Bowen ever played for the Suns, I'd still boo him. One of the few guys I'd never cheer for. No matter what.

want a preview of that? remember when shaq accidentally elbowed raja at the back of the head? remember the billiard ball at the back of bell's head? i'm sure raja won't forget that, neither would bowen :)

oh, and for the record i don't hate the spurs nor bowen, just want a little eye for an eye...

And get 4 offensive fouls trying to jump over guys for highlight dunks. I just want Amare to be the Amare that stays on the court all game and dominates. Forget revenge, forget getting even. Win and dominate!!

I read one time that Bill Russell and Wilt hated each other.

I used to hate how much Barkley and MJ liked each other. I have always believed that if Barkley had hated Jordan the Suns would have won it all that year.

that's why Raja don't like Shaq. Until now. I can see it. There's something wrong between them..

D'Antoni and Nash may not know or condone this, but Shaq does and will: Should something happen to a Suns starter or any player caused by seemingly innocent actions by Bowen or Oberto, or even Vaughn, it won't be Bowen or Oberto or Vaughn who will be the object of retaliation, it will be one of the Spurs Big 3.

This is part of Shaq's playoff-smarts. And there is nothing wrong with this... this unspoken threat of violence is what keeps reasonable people in line, keeps the game clean and keeps players safe. This is the way players police themselves. The problem is that some players think they can push the envelope of what is allowed and decent to give the impression of an accident when in fact, it was intentional... this kind of blanket threat is the only way to actively deter the Bowens of this world... refs are not effective in this respect because they can only react after the damage is already done.

The idea is best summed up in this quote:

Don Corleone:
But I’m a superstitious man. And if some unlucky accident should befall him…if he should get shot in the head by a police officer, or if he should hang himself in his jail cell, or if he’s struck by a bolt of lightning, then I’m going to blame some of the people in this room. And that I do not forgive. But that aside, let me say that I swear, on the souls of my grandchildren, that I will not be the one who will break the peace we have made here today.

Channel 10 (fox) news had a sports segment dedicated to bowens shots on the suns today. Jude Lacava is their sports guy and you could totally tell he had a personal anger towards him as he presented the story, complete with plenty of footage of bowen tripping nash multiple times. It was quite anger inducing.

What a dirty player, this instructional video led millions of basketball players to protect themselves when running into a screen. Look at the defender, he actually led with his elbows!

I am telling you, players should go through screens like Suns players, lead with their heads, better to suffer a broken jaw than to hit 6'10" 250lb athletes with an elbow, because we all know how fragile a screener is, and that the screener should NEVER expect to have any physical contact when setting a screen.

in HS i've done thing like intentionally hurting other players while abiding by the rulebook. i can make it look like you just landed in my foot accidentally, or whack you silly while going for the ball, or make it look like i accidentally landed my elbow on your forehead after a rebound, and so on. he's mastered that art of concealing (one of the reasons why i'd take him in my roster). still, i'll sure be wating for the suns spurs playoff matchup, where shaq can use his "unintentional" elbows and "clean" hard fouls :D
