He is an unresricted free agent.

Ahhh.... I didn't realize Barea is unrestricted. In that case lets offload Brooks and go for Berea. That is one feisty **** I wouldn't mind having on my team. Could you imagine how ballistic Mark Cuban would go if we outbid him for Nash and did it again with Barea?

It's almost worth it just to see that.

It won't happen though. I just looked it up and it says that it's the Mavs #1 target out of all their free agents. Sounds like Cuban will make sure they keep him.

If I'm not mistaken, Barea was inserted into the starting lineup starting with Game 4 of the Finals, from which point the Mavericks won three straight games. One could easily make the case that promoting Barea was the key adjustment that tipped the series in favor of Dallas. There's no way they're letting him go -- unless for some inconceivable reason he wants to leave, since he can do whatever he wants.

Yep. He even said he wants to stay. Something tells me he is about to get a FAT raise.

He has to sign both Barea and Chandler. But the lure of a repeat might be too much to overcome.

Barea is awesome. I'd love to have that guy on my team.

That may indeed happen, but I think Dallas' first priority will be re-signing Chandler. Technically, Dallas has Bird rights to both of these players so they can re-sign them to any amount. However, it will be interesting to see if that is still the case under the new CBA. If owners do get a hard cap, or something closer to that than what we currently have, then Dallas may not be able to re-sign both or offer them large contracts.

Nash will play extended minutes and break down. Its a guarantee.
This is the phrase that the Suns FO has to keep in mind in every Point Guard negotiation they consider.

N a s h w i l l b r e a k d o w n !

(A) If we go with an inferior backup Point Guard (inferior within Steve's system) and do not have a serviceable 3rd Point Guard when Steve is out (as we did last year), we will lose a lot of games.

(B) If Nash must lead the team in minutes once again, he will break down. See (A).

To be effective, berea needs to be paired with a big defensive minded pg like kidd (or that shumpert kid).

Huh? The lure of a repeat will make him try all the harder. Why would he want to overcome such a lure?

Sorry for the fuzzy use of pronouns.

The lure of a repeat for Berea might be too much of an obstacle for the Suns to overcome in order to sign him as a FA.

Under the current structure/ CBA, definitely no more than a MLE. Once you go over that, it becomes very difficult to trade people.

Depends on the length of the contract. Give him a 6 million one year deal with a team option for a second year at 6.25 or so. The Suns then arent trapped under a bad deal and he has the incentive of being a UFA.

Barea is not woth that much anyway. Just the next role player who gets overpaid because he played a role for a championship team.

Chandler wants a top NBA contract. He wanted CP money before he was traded. When they asked him if he was committed to Dallas he basically didn't answer. They also asked him if he was basically willing to take a "discount" like Dirk to return. He said "Dirk has a lot more money then I do".

Chandler isn't going to take a discount and the Mavs are going to have to pay to dollar.

JJ will be an easier sign IMO. He said he wants to return and I bet they could get him to come back to coincide with the end of Dirk's contract. He will probably sign in the 20 million dollar range over 4 years and be a Mav.

Barea has been drawing my attention for several years. He is a legit player even if he may not look the part. He is definitely worth a reasonable contract. He comes to play every night.

I don't think there is a snowball's chance that Cuban would not do everything to keep him nor do I believe Barea would want to leave.
