I read that Griffith is going to retire.. my question is :

Can Shazor or Fransico play FS? I really would like to see Shazor get a chance to play there but at 6'3" 230lbs.. is he able to man that spot or is he more of a CB or WLB type?

any thoughts?

I wonder the same thing about Shazor (except wether he can play corner, lol) only because he seems to be almost a unknown as far as what he can do in the NFL. He played a little in kick coverage towards the end of the year, but I never saw him in on any tackles. In my opinion however, if Wilson is going to continue to play up close to the line of scrimmage (which I love), then we're gonna need a free safety who can cover some ground and help out in pass coverage. With that being said what little I know about Fransisco and Shazor (lack of speed) tells me that they might not be right for the job. I could be wrong though just MHO.

Even if Griffith doesn't retire we will need a young quick SS. The coaches pretty much know what they have in Shazar and Fransisco. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we take a look in the third or fourth round for a player that can cover, speed and strenght. I think this draft is pretty deep in this area. The other route is FA.

Important areas of need
O-line gaurds
D-line NT
RB ?
SS
Back up QB

Shazor is too slow to play SS in the NFL so there's no way we're going to replace Griffith with him at FS. This is a great draft for FS, we should be able to get one.

I'd like to see Shazor pan out. I was real excited when we picked him up, but I don't remember him getting on the field after we reclaimed him. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

That talk with the coach that was posted here one of the questions said something like if Griffith retires will Shazor get a chance at FS. That's probably where it came from, I don't think Griffith has actually said he's retiring.

Shazor is not a FS, and he is even less of a FS put next to Wilson. Heck they are even thinking about trying to add weight to him and try him out at WLB. That does not scream FS to me.

Fransisco is also a SS and was Wilsons backup this past season. But at least he has just as much maybe more speed then Griffith did so he could at least do as good of a job in the speed area of the FS position compared to Griffith.

Also, were did you here that Griffith was going to retire.

Mr Wonderful, Kent Somers, mentioned it yesterday in his article.

Safeties

[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Evaluation: Strong safety Adrian Wilson played at a Pro Bowl level after he started playing closer to the line of scrimmage. Free safety Robert Griffith, 35, might be done, and there isn't an obvious replacement on the roster.

Unsolicited advice: Safeties don't attract big money in free agency, nor are they usually high draft picks. The Cardinals should search for a bargain in free agency or a later-round draft pick to compete for a job.

Priority: Moderate.

He might be done=Retiring??

To me: He might be done=He'll suck worse next year.

The safety position is easy to fill. Each year in FA there are many FS and SS available as they are cheap. Often some quite good ones. The Cards should be able to get a solid upgrade at FS this offseason. Either a proven FA FS, an older CB looking to extend their NFL life, or a college CB who is just a tad slow to play CB in the NFL should work fine.

I don't know what Denny was thinking trying to convert Griffith from SS to FS. He was supposed to be old and wise, but a FS needs more speed than a SS. He was old and slow for a SS in 2004 and just don't know why they thought he could be an improvement by converting to a position where he needs to be faster.

He was probably thinking that Griffith's natural position is FS since that is what he played a majority of his career in the NFL as. He moved to SS in Cleveland out of necessity (injuries to others) not because he can't play FS.

I hear Aeneas Williams is looking for work! Also Dexter Jackson is available, I think. ;)

Just kidding... sort of! :bigyawn:

True, he was the guy you know who played catch with in the first half in our loss to Minnesota in 1998.

He was also the guy that dropped an INT right in his hands that would have clinched the win over the Falcons and put them in the Superbowl that year.

If it seems like he's been around forever, he has. Was once a terrific player.

Dexter Jackson was starting for the Bucs in the playoffs. I heard his name a few times when I was listening to the game.

It's a shame the way things turned out with Jackson. He was one of my favourite Cardinals. I always thought he would of been a great compliment to AW at FS.

Isn't Adam Archuleta from STL (Former ASU standout) possibly going to become a FA?

If so, anyone have any clue what type of money he should get in the market?

Even though him and Wilson play the same safety spot I would sure like to see the two of them dishing out hits in our backfield.

My opinion is to draft Jimmy Williams and get either a OG like Giles or a QB like Omar Jacobs if he falls.

....but we'd be in deep trouble in the pass game.
