It is crystal clear Bleacher Report is concerned about the New Orleans Saints quality at edge rusher and unmoved by the re-signing of Chase Young. Through the offseason, the publication has said the entire NFC South needed to prioritize edge rusher heading into free agency. After the Young deal was announced, they labeled edge defender as a paramount need heading into the NFL draft. Now Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox is labeling Matthew Judon as the free agent still on the market who can help the Saints.
There's a clear consensus within Bleacher Report, because those three articles were penned by three different writers. Judon was the player suggested for New Orleans before free agency started, so the shared opinion even extends to the solution.
Judon spent the season with the Atlanta Falcons last year, and wasn't very effective. He only totaled 5.5 sacks, which would have matched Carl Granderson and Young for most by an edge rusher in New Orleans. However, getting someone who wasn't more productive than your starting duo doesn't feel like a sound strategy.
The Saints still need to bolster their pass rush, but the two routes to do it should be a productive veteran or a rookie with upside or possibly both. Judon doesn't fit either category. He had a strong run with the Patriots before suffering an injury early in 2023, but he'll be 33 years old when the season starts and coming off a down year. There's a chance he has a resurgence, but his path feels best suited for an accompanying pass rusher opposed to potentially being one of the lead rushers.
