According to Larry Coon you lose all your exemptions once you go under the cap and you don't get them back. They are awarded at the beginning of the offseason and the Suns will be under the cap so they never really get it.

I don't think it'll be a problem resigning Dice if we do sign Kobe; doesn't the MLE open up for use once we go over the cap?

I thought it does, and if so, the only problem we might have is we sign Kobe and he puts us just under the cap.

No. There is no MLE if the team is below the cap.

Dice may end up with the veteran minimum of $1 million which is a separate exemption from the MLE and low end exemption of about $1.7 million.

My guess is that the Suns will need more than the veteran minimum to re-sign Dice, but not the $4 to $5 million some fans expect. His three operations in two years will keep the price down. I would guess that if all he could get was a $3 million deal, he would take $2 million because of the success he has had with the Suns medical people and how the team has treated him. He just finished a $67 million contract so another million one way or another may not matter that much to him.

How credible is the Insider article? A month ago they were sure the cap would increase to 47M$.

David Stern said in his "speech" the other day that overall league revenues are up this year, so I doubt that the cap would decrease.
Because that's exactly why Insider is now guessing the cap could decrease.

Revenues going down despite attendance going up and the Lebron and Carmelo hype doesn't seem to make sense anyway.

If the cap shrinks, it implies the average quality of min. wage FAs will increase. With Kobe on board and suns' good reputation, we should get the best among those 'leftovers'. Don't worry!

I've seen a lot of posts about McDyess and Veteran Minimum - being that Salary Cap isn't my expertise ;) but are we talking Veteran Minimum as in 10 year VM (exemption)? McDyess' rookie year was 95-96 and I believe that would make him a 9 year Veteran?

You may be right. In any case, I think the Suns will need to go higher unless they sign Kobe - at which point they won't be able to do much.
