That's the buzz around Sac-town, anyway. The radio stations there have Salmons already signed by the Kings.

Salary and other information to follow...

The Kings may have used their entire MLE. This is supposed to be according to Geoff Petrie. No word on the number of years yet.

This is obviously the end of Bonzi Wells in Sacto. Wells and Geoff Petrie had come to a standoff in salary negotiations.

My guess is, Kevin Martin takes over the starting SG spot, with Salmons stepping in as sixth man.

Heard it was for the full mle. I can't believe how big a player this guy was in FA.

That is a poor replacement for Bonzi Wells, if that's what it is...

Kevin Martin looked promising, as he played well late in the season including some clutch playoff performances. I'm not sure what Bonzi wants, but I would assume he wants them to break the bank. I definitley would not give Bonzi a near max deal for max years with his past history of conduct. It's only a matter of time before he gets caught with weed, gets a D.U.I., or quarrels with his coach.

bonzi was the only reason the kings put up such a fight in the playoffs, with him gone they are going to be early playoff exits at most. His performance in the playoffs made even tim thomas heroics look like childs play.

He is just like nash, limit his minutes during the regular season and then give him 40 in the playoffs and off he goes, now if we do that with nash this year we are going to be a powerhouse come playoff time.

Talking to some big time King fans yesterday, they were relatively unconcerned about Bonzi Wells. In fact, they said IF Bonzi would actually stay, he would still be a bench guy behind Kevin Martin.

Bonzi had a good playoff series over a few games, but that's it. I got the impression that his play for those couple games weren't enough for them to be impressed with him and want to resign him.

I heard it was 6 years 36 million....I hope not for the Kings sake. Salmons should be okay but he's not that good. I wanted him because I thought he'd fit well with us but the Kings could've gotten him cheaper if they waited.

That would be a ridiculous salary for Salmons, even based on potential. If that's true, some people owe Salmons an apology.

Hmmm, if it's 6 years, 36 mil... I can see why Salmons backed away from Toronto.

In fact, I wouldn't put it past his agent (or any other agent) to walk away from a handshake deal for a sweeter deal. Slimeball, behind-the-scenes action.

I would be pissed if I was Bryan Colangelo. Not so much the fact that they lost Salmons, but the way it was handled. It basically tied Toronto up for a couple weeks, while they could have been making other deals.

While I think Salmons is a good, solid NBA contributor... no way in hell do I give him this $$$. Good luck SAC trying to unload this contract in a couple years.

It's impossible for them to offer that contract to Salmons. That was the rumored contrac they offered Bonzi Wells, the most the Kings could offer is the mle which is what is being reported (5yr 31mil).

The way this is going, Salmons will agree to, and then reject the offer he gets from the Kings. He'll get a higher offer from another team, which he says he'll gladly take, until he decideds otherwise. Eventually he'll end up with a max deal and will be touted as the next MJ. His agent is brilliant!

It would have to be a sign and trade. If the Sixers wanted Wells, then something could be put together.

Was my understanding Salmons already signed the deal and the Kings have no intention of giving Wells a S&T.

I thought the Sixers let go of Salmons after he said no to Toronto. It's not a trade.

Yeah, but it's better for Colangelo since they got someone better. David Wells promised Jerry Colangelo that he's sign with the D-Backs and I sure am glad that he went to the Yankees. :) Both guys were lied to but it kept them from making a mistake.

The Marcus Banks signing is looking better and better. It seems to me the Suns got him at a fair price and there is no doubt the Suns needed a backup PG.

I can't believe Salmons is being given the amount of money reported. He might turn into a great player but his stats do not presently support this. And I believe he has been in the league 4 years(?) and Philly was apparently eager to let him go.

My god, it's 5 years for 36 million not 6...

Report: Kings sign G-F John Salmons

July 24, 2006
SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) - John Salmons apparently has found a home.

After refusing to go to the Phoenix Suns or Toronto Raptors in sign-and-trade deals, Salmons signed Monday with the Sacramento Kings, according to a report on the web site of the Sacramento Bee.

Salmons came into the offseason as a restricted free agent of the Philadelphia 76ers, who had the right to match any offer he received from another team.

The four-year swingman had been offered $22 million over five years by the Suns in a sign-and-trade. Instead, the 76ers worked a deal with the Raptors in which Salmons was to receive $23 million over five years.

Philadelphia was to receive a 2007 second-round pick and a $2 million trade exception as compensation, rescinding their rights to Salmons. However, he pulled out of the deal, claiming the Raptors would not have been a good fit for him.

The 6-8 Salmons averaged career highs of 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists last season. In 281 games with Philadelphia, he has averaged 5.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

The Bee also reported that the signing of Salmons means the Kings will not re-sign free agent swingman Bonzi Wells. The Kings reportedly offered Wells $36 million over five years at the outset of the negotiating period earlier this month.

That report seems to imply that they offer Bonzi Wells 36 million for 5 years, not Salmons. I don't think they can even offer Salmons that much.

Salmons' deal starts at $4.4 million, with 8 percent increases every season thereafter. The Kings, who are over the league's salary cap, used their midlevel exception to sign Salmons. They still have $800,000 remaining from the $5.2 million exception to sign other free agents. Petrie said he will be used as a point guard, shooting guard, and small forward, adding versatility to an already-versatile roster.

5 years, $25.5 million.

Message board Kings fans are pissed, because the team has used its MLE and didn't address their rebounding issues (rebounding was one of the reasons Bonzi was a good fit for them).

Anyway, this is kind of good news for us Suns fans--the team's talent scouting has been endorsed by BC and now Geoff Petrie. Considering that nobody else thought Salmons was worth anything like $22m, that's a good sign.

And again, it's fun to see another team rip Salmons away from BC, the same way BC stole him from the Suns.

And Sacramento is a really nice place to live for a pro baller. It's small enough to be cozy and big enough to not feel like Mayberry. I'm sure Salmons can buy a nice big house in the naturally-occurring asbestos-laden Hills of El Dorado.

Hmmm looks like BC failed to close the deal. I wonder if raptor fans are calling him out for being outmaneuvered, like suns fans called DAntoni and sarver out. As a matter of fact it looks like it pretty much had the same effect of tying up the decision making process for a long while(2weeks before, and 2 weeks after?).

The message boards I read, the Toronto fans are thrilled. They thinked they dodged a bullet and that Salmons was not worth the contract they offered.
