Sarver signed off on Marion deal, Larry Miller nixed it

How close was Marion to being swapped for Kirilenko? Utah owner Larry Miller told the Salt Lake Tribune Saturday that Phoenix’s offer was the only one that ever “generated any steam” when they fielded proposals after the Russian told the team he wanted to be traded.

Miller also intimated that he killed a possible straight-up, Kirilenko-for-Marion trade, supposedly because of the hefty three-year, $60 million contract extension Marion is reportedly seeking. NBA sources confirmed that a deal of similar components — one that included extraneous elements such as draft picks and cash — was amicable to Phoenix and signed off on by Suns owner Robert Sarver.

Great. The last thing we needed was for something like this to go public.

Why does it matter? Marion asked for a trade and the Suns tried to trade him. Marion wanted an extensiona and the Jazz turned it down. Nothing has changed, except this trade could have happened. There would have been picks and possibly another player involved.

This isn't really new news. I read this on another site about 2 weeks ago. This could've been what really set Marion off though. It was around that time when he supposedly told the FO he wanted out.

If we traded Marion for Kirilenko straight up I would have lost the last bit of faith I have in this front office.

I remember hearing that as soon as Sarver became a managing partner 3 years ago, he tried to get the Colangelos to trade Marion as soon as he got here. It's no secret that Sarver wants Marion gone.

I like the deal. I would love to get Millsap as part of the package, but I know it wouldn't happen.

I'd trust Kirilenko in the playoffs, more than Marion. Sad.

Why? Kirilenko is half the player Marion is in the playoffs. Seriously. Go look at his playoff stats. He is caca.

This is all according to Larry Miller so I take it with a grain of salt. It's not like he's going to say "I tried like hell to dump Kirlenko on another team, but nobody wanted him." With all the BS & spin that comes out of every owner, GM & coach in this league, why would anyone trust what another teams owner has to say (even if it does sound believable)?

Because Marion in the playoffs is like a box of chocolates.

From what I've heard, Marion asked to be traded shortly after the draft. Though, we're not really sure exactly when the Jazz trade discussion happened. It does seem like the Boston scenario is what set him off, not Utah.

Boston would have been a perfect scenario for him. 2nd option, alleged extension, decent sized market, playoff worthy.

I dont get why he would veto that...

You are blinded by your love for KG (and perhaps not unwarranted). I will presume that you are not an NBA player. Money being equal, who would YOU want to play for/with?

Too bad Ainge wasn't willing to bet Marion plays next yr for 17 mil....I will be surprised if he gets anything close to his(agent's) demand.

He will have to smell some roses next yr....and I can't imagine Utah balking at a chance to rid themselves of AK, for an allstar w/a potential expiring deal. Especially after the mediocre yr AK threw up.

I would like to believe this, just so three years from now, I'm not pulling out my hair over the Suns not getting Kirilenko when they had the chance.

Trying to believe...no, not believing it. Too convenient for the Jazz, and Larry Miller has lied before.

My read was that the offered extension was not to his liking and the Celtics were not going to do the deal without a "reasonable" one.

BTW, I'm convinced Shawn has an "evil twin". How else can you explain why he's demanding to be traded and upset that they try to trade him. It's not just him. It's his evil twin too. :p
