Somers says in his blog that Coach Whiz would be willing to divulge a few more plays if it mean winning the game Saturday. He says it is important for this team to get a win in the preseason.

Agree?

Let me ask this question: Will a win over the Texans in preseason really build anyone's confindence? (Shane Boyd, I am probably looking at you)

Yep. You can't expect the team to be 0-4 during the preseason. Let them win one, even if it is the last one.

There are plays we WANT the opposition to see such as Q's end around or perhaps a fake punt. We need to give our opponents a few things to worry about.
I'm still not worried about winning yet. Lets win the first half. To me thats like a victory because the second half will be our 2nd string.

they're playing the Texans in Pink Taco....preseason or not, does anybody think they'll lose? I think they can chalk this up as a win

Buddy Ryan focused on winning preseason games. Didn't he bring the first teamers back in the fourth quarter against Cleveland back in '94 to get a win and still lose?

Preseason wins and losses mean nothing as far as I'm concerned, it's like winning a scrimage against your own team.

Just line your boys straight up against the other team, keep your line calls plain, your play calls vanilla, let the chips fall where they may, and evaluate the talent.

You should be trying to win Game 3, the game in which your starters play the most. This game is for evaluating players.

Yep, the Texans are no longer the worst team in the league. We shall win. :)

I am not sure I care whether they win or lose but that they make progress on what they need to work on. If part of the learning curve is to open the playbook, then so be it. You only get so far working on stuff in practice because there is such a small amount of hitting anymore and they really don't go anywhere near full speed.

The preseason games are critical to get things down at near full speed with full contact so if they need to reveal more of their plays....

Spot on, the preseson game is an extension of practice. A chance to work on the basics in a game situation, as said earlier, game 3 is the crunch game, one and two are for appraisal and getting the fundamentals right. If a win comes, so be it.

I disagree. Winning is not important.

However, running live plays from deeper in the playbook IS important, just for the live looks at them. But not because they help you win.

JMO.

I don't care if we are 0-4 as long as we come out of preseason with all the kinks ironed out and the first team looked solid. I couldn't care less if our scrubs beat their scrubs or held onto a lead or came back.

Well put. But if we go for a win in the 4th period, I'd hope we do it with the scrubs and don't bring the starters back in.

I agree, if the plays work but the scrubs cost us the game then who cares.

Evaluation and preperation for the team and the fans. :)

I need to make sure the beer vendors are in their correct assigned positions. And have properly iced the beverages. You know...the crucial stuff.

Yeah, let's develop that in the regular season. We've been undefeated in the preseason before...no trophies come with that.

True.

But winning is an attitude and this team has been beaten down too long.

I think it matters.

Reference: The Chicago game.

Reference 4-0 in preseason last year. Didn't seem to matter.

We need it more than most, IMO.

Reference:

Can you detect the pattern in this table? More preseason wins = more regular season wins on average! Preseason results do seem to matter in that teams with three or more preseason victories are markedly better than teams with fewer wins, and the rare teams which go winless in preseason are indeed facing trouble in the regular season as well [well, excepting last year when both the Colts and Chiefs did okay...]

Another way to make the case that teams with wins in the exhibitions may be primed for good seasons is that teams which won three or more games went on to win 10+ games in the regular season 38% of the time, whereas of the teams which were winless or had just one win in the exhibition season, only 25% were able to post double digit wins.

A good, creative coach, like we hope Whisenhunt is, shouldn't be afraid to open the playbook some in preseason. You can always can the look of the formation presnap, change personnel, change down-and-distance for any given play you ran in preseason.

You don't want to lose home games to teams like the Texans. Not even in preseason. It just isn't a good idea. If we were the Colts or Pats, I'd say "Big Deal" if we lost. But, we aren't an elite team, to put it mildly.

I hate to be the pessimist here, but the cards have lost to the worst team in the league for like the last 5 years.
