It says a lot about the Colangelos. He has championship rings from his days in Chicago yet he wants to retire as a Sun. Gotta love it.

Isn't it impressive that suns managment is willing to let S. Williams go pursue a ring - without trying to make a trade?

I think thats pretty neat!

I'm sure the C's don't mind letting him go just to get rid of his salary

That is correct.

I believe that's right. I think he goes something like this. The team that waived him in the first place is responsible for the difference in salaries if there is one. Because Scott Williams is going to sign for the veteran minimum I don't believe the Suns will have to pay anything.

I still haven't heard for sure how it affects the salary cap however.

I thought veteran minimum salaries don't count against the cap and are paid by the league or something like that?

I think in your scenerio is if he clears waivers. If he is picked up off waviers the team that picks him up takes over his current contract. I could be wrong though.

Scott Williams is not going to sign a new contract, he already has one if the team picks him up off waivers. If the suns released him and no one picked him up, then the suns have to pay his salary, and then any team can sign him but they have to pay him whatever is agreed to between them.

In other words, if Dallas picks him off waivers the suns are off the hook and Dallas pays the remainder of his salary.

I am sorry to see Scott Williams go but I wish him well in Dallas.
He may not have been the best player to ever play but he is tops as a human being. A few months ago Paula B in the Republic had an article of him which discussed the abusive background his father had. His father committed a murder suicide with his mother while Scott was in North Carolina. I come from an abusive background m yself and was really touched by the article. People such as Jason Kidd or Kobe Bryant are great players but Scott Williams is a great guy. It is not co incidedntal why someone without a lot of natural talent has been in the league as long as Scott.
When my 2 year old son gets older, Scott is a role model I would like him to have. I hope he will be back in the organization next year

On the floor, Scott played a very big role in helping the Suns get into the playoffs. He always played hard and was usually pretty productive. Off the floor, he was the sort of leader every teams needs.

I'm sure he'll be back. I hope he has fun playing for Nellie.

Mavericks claim Scott Williams off waivers

It's offical.

January 30, 2004

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks were awarded forward Scott Williams on a waiver claim Friday, giving them a much-needed defensive presence in the low post.

The 6-foot-10 Williams, a 13-year veteran, was waived Wednesday by the Phoenix Suns. There were reports in Los Angeles that the Lakers planned to sign Williams, but the Mavericks claimed his contract.

"The Lakers didn't put a claim on him,'' agent Arn Tellem said. "He's happy. This is what he wanted.''

Williams appeared in 16 games for Phoenix, including 10 starts, and averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds. He won three NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls from 1991-93.

One of the league's worst defensive teams, the Mavericks have allowed teams to score 99.8 points -- the highest opponents' average of any NBA team.

Williams is expected to be uniform Saturday against Denver.

Dallas had an open spot on its roster and did not have to make another move
