Scottie Scheffler reminded everyone of who he is on Friday in the second round of the Texas Children's Houston Open.
Scheffler, the world's No. 1-ranked player, posted his season-low round of 62 at Memorial Park and took a two-shot lead over Taylor Pendrith and Jackson Suber at the time he finished, just before 2 p.m. (EDT), at 11-under-par 129.
Scheffler missed only one green and drained three birdie putts of 22 feet or longer. He has yet to make a bogey this week.
He posted identical 4-under 31s on each side of Memorial Park.
Scheffler won seven times last year in earning his third consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award. By this time he had already won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship, and would go on to win the Masters, the Tour Championship at East Lake to win the FedEx Cup and the Olympic Gold Medal.
His last official victory was at East Lake.
But Scheffler is winless in five starts in 2025, the first time in the last four seasons he has failed to win a tournament by mid-March. Scheffler has played commendably, with all five finishes among the top-25, and a tie for third at the Genesis Invitational.
He tied for 20th in his last start, when he was attempting to win a third Players Championship in a row.
Scheffler got off to a late start because of a hand injury on Christmas Day in his kitchen. He didn't play until the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, missing the first four weeks of the season.
But after The Players, he had a bit of a warning for the rest of the PGA Tour.
"I feel like there's some stuff that I need to work on at home," he said, "but I feel very close."
If Scheffler is indeed entering the kind of groove he had last season, it's coming at the perfect time: his next start will be the Masters, where he will be defending his 2024 title.
