George Boone Retired
Steve Kiem Promoted to head of college scouting.
Lonnie Young Promoted to head of western division of scouting.
Dave Razzano New Hire from the Rams of which he spent 14 years there.
All other scouts that had contracts ending were re-signed.

We are still looking for a pro personnel Scout replacing the fired Rodd Newhouse.

And Still not sure about Graves status once his contract ends pretty soon.

boone

even the blind squirrel finds an acorn

i was never a george boone fan...however in retrospect under the old regime scouting $$$ was non-existent he did the best he could and certainly had his share of major major (two majors) blunders...lets give him his due and wish him a happy retirement...he has been around twice and things started to look up when the $$$ loosened up....here is a dirty little secret...the teams that have "rebuilding years" when they go 8-8/7-9 still spend the bucks on scouting....that's where it's at!!

Boone didn't join the Cards until 1973.

Jackie Smith was taken in the 10th round in 1963!

Dierdorf was drafted in 1971.

Boone also drafted Tim Gray, Steve Pisarkiewicz,Steve Little,Clyde Duncan,Anthony Bell, and Kelly Stouffer, in the first round.

Other great Boone selections:Bonnie Sloan DT 1973, Sergio Albert K 1974, Ron Franklin DT 1975, Marty Akins wishbone QB Texas 1976, Terdell Middleton 1977, Kirk Gibson WR 1979, Johnny Walker RB Texas 1984.

The early round failures were numerous but the Cards got several late round gems like Stump Mitchell, Niko Noga, and Vai Sikahema.

Best Boone selection ever was Kenny King 9th round 1973 - still with the team 23 years later.:D

As I've said a million times before, the picking of Clyde Duncan over Louis Lipps was so bad it literally changed the path of the Cards franchise for agest. IN the decade between 74 and 83(Duncan was picked after the 83 season), the Cards had 4 winning seasons and one .500 season.

IN the 10 years after that, 84 to 93 we had one winning season, and one .500 season, and the winning season was the '84 team that failed to make the playoffs with 10 wins and can easily be blamed on that one selection. Lipps was the AFC ROY that year, he was exactly the player the Cards needed, and he was the guy everyone expected us to take. But we took Duncan for financial reasons. That team completely imploded over drug use which of course wasn't Duncan's fault but to this day I still say that was the single worst event in franchise history.

Duckjake got it right (balanced too). Although Mr. Boone had his share of winners, when you measure him against the standard of "winning teams should be consistently successful with their top four picks each year", George had a really bad track record drafting enough good players each year - particularly when picking guys in the second round:

Jim Germany RB (1975 second round), George Franklin FB (1977 second round), John Barefield LB (second round 1978], Calvin Favron LB (second round 1979), Cedric Mack CB (second round 1983 - decent creds, but I include him here because I threw dozens of beer mugs against the wall watching him get torched over and over and over again). Scott Bergold T (second round 1985), Tony Jeffrey (second round 1988].

"Back in the day" (late 1980's) I was on the horn with an old friend who was sports editor of The Trentonian when I was there, but who had moved on to become a football writer for The Sporting News. I asked him what he thought were the main reasons the Cardinals couldn't get over the hump and succeed.

"Too many Boone players" he replied. "As soon as the Cards replace most of those guys with better talent, they'll be a better team."

I think my friend was right.

i think i have a worse one to share....thanksgiving day 1976 versus miami...playoff implications....greise had the game in hand BEFORE the end of the first half of the first quarter....put the team...coryell was the coach then if i remember right...on ice for 30+ years and counting...what a lousy turkey that day...i wish i could forget that game
