A league source tells us that the Seattle Seahawks have released running back Edgerrin James.

James, an 11-year veteran, spent seven years with the Colts before signing with the Cardinals as a free agent in 2006. He asked to be released after losing his starting job during the 2008 season, but the Cardinals kept him around. Ultimately, he was re-installed as the starter for the team's inspiring playoff run.

The Cardinals continued to squat on his rights through the draft, during which they picked Ohio State running back Beanie Wells with the 31st selection in round one.

James drew mild interest before landing in Seattle during the latter portion of August. He rushed for 125 yards on 46 carries, an average of only 2.7 yards per attempt.

Still, his performance was sufficient to pass Marcus Allen on the all-time rushing list. Currently, James is at No. 10, 33 yards behind Marshall Faulk.

Since the trading deadline has passed, James will be required to pass through waivers. He has a base salary of $1 million. If unclaimed, he'll be entitled to collect the balance of base pay ($529,000) as termination pay.

It remains to be seen whether James, a very strong candidate for induction into the Hall of Fame, lands with another team this year.

I'm afraid this is probably the end of the line for Edge. I'm thankful for his contributions to the Cardinals while he was here, but we have no use for him now.

I look forward to his HOF induction.

I look forward to his HOF induction.

Is he first ballot material?? Heck, is he even HOF material at all?? The list of potential HOFers in the coming years is going to be very long. There are already potential HOFers from years past that havent gotten in yet. Ricky Waters was a better player than Edge, yet he isnt in yet (controversy hasn't help). In Indy, he was always in the shadow of Peyton and Harrison and he went into the abyss according to the voters when he signed with AZ.

The HOF is numbers driven. He's the 10th all-time leading rusher. Of the top 19 running backs in the history of the game, every single one of them who is eligible has been elected.

He's got better stats than Marcus Allen, Franco Harris, Thurman Thomas, John Riggins, and Larry Csonka and played less years than each of them. He's less than 100 yards away from the great Jim Brown.

He'll get in. Maybe not first ballot, but the numbers will get him in.

he'll be in the HOF no doubt. I was reading an article yesterday and they referred to Jamaal Lewis as future HOF RB Jamaal Lewis  .

Considering all of the other moves the Seahags made today one gets the impression that they are already writing off this season and looking to build toward the future.

To the hags credit, at least they let him get to 10th all time before axing him.

There are a few teams that could use him. He needs a better O line. He doesn't have many carries left in the NFL....bet he's scared.

He was a class act the time he spent with the Cards. Making the HOF has become more of a popularity contest with sportswriters than actual performance and value to the team. So who knows whether or not Edge will get into the HOF.
