Winter Super Teams are on their way, but before we get there, we need help from our readers.
This year, our readers will help determine our players of the year in every sport.
Much like we did with the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, our readers will have a say in who our Players of the Year are. We've cut down the list of the best of the best into an even more elite group (no easy task).
Vote for our High School Wrestler of the Year. Reader votes will make up 25% of the tally, with Sports Editor Laurie Los Lee making up the rest of the vote.
The candidates are listed alphabetically.
Voting will conclude at 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 6.
The junior captain captured his second straight South Sectional championship this winter, winning at 113 pounds in addition to finishing second at the Div. 1 state tournament and fifth at All-States. He also went 38-14 during the regular season. “He never gets nervous about a match or gets rattled no matter who is wrestling or what obstacles get placed in his way,” said New Bedford head coach Steve Sentes. “One of the toughest top wrestlers around.”
After going 44-12 during the regular season, the junior won the South Sectional championship at 120 pounds. He also placed fourth at Div. 1 states and seventh at the All-State meet. “He’s the comeback king,” Sentes said. “He has a never-give-up attitude and is constantly looking to score points. He is a force to be reckoned with on his feet.”
Oliva, a sophomore, enjoyed a breakout year by going 44-13 during the regular season. He won the South Sectional championship at 106 pounds and went on to place sixth at the Div. 1 state meet. “Just like his brother Anthony, Edrian is a hammer in the top position,” Sentes said. “Edrian was our most improved wrestler and finished with the most wins on the team.”
