Reports: Theismann out on 'MNF'

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Joe Theismann will not return as an analyst on "Monday Night Football" this season, according to reports from Newsday and The New York Times.

When reached by phone, according to Newsday, Theismann would neither confirm nor deny the report, and added he could not respond publicly "until I fully understand what has taken place."

A Super Bowl-winning quarterback with the Redskins and ESPN NFL commentator since 1988, Theismann, 57, was apparently informed of his removal on Friday. But Newsday quoted an ESPN spokesman as saying "we have nothing to announce."

In ESPN's first year of MNF, Theismann had been paired with Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser. Media critics often pointed out the lack of cohesion between Theismann and Kornheiser, even though the Washington D.C.-based personalities have known each other for more than 25 years.

Theismann's replacement could be current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski. Other names bandied about include Bill Parcells (who recently signed on with ESPN) and Emmitt Smith, the league's all-time rushing leader. An official announcement could come Monday.

Oh please let this be true. Theismann is just AWFUL

All I can say is, "about freaking time". Man, he's sucked as long as I can remember. Enough is enough.

Not likely. Kornheiser is still there. I like the addition of Jaws, but they need to lose Korn. I like PTI, but he shouldn't be in the MNF booth. I wish MNF would get over the gimmicky crap and just give us a play by play guy with a really knowledgeable color guy. If they need a third, bring in an old coach (like they did with Vermeil). And lose the booth visitors.

I'm one of the few that doesn't mind TK on MNF (though he definitely isn't great). Theismann on the otherhand is absolutely awful.

I love Kornheiser and miss his show on ESPN Radio. I'm still not sold on him on MNF. Theisman is pretty much a tool.

Joe puts you to sleep and to him every player in the league is great ..

Jaws or Parcells will be a big improvement ...

When Jaws and vermiel did that games together last year it was the best commentary I'd heard in a long time.

Exactly!
I also agree with Shane and Jason. Tony K tries to be a comedian of sorts, I just wanna watch a game! Jason is right, when Vermiel was on there, it was all about football. That's all I wanna hear about, not Jamie Foxx's new movie.

I know I am in the extreme minority, but I actually didn't mind Theismann that much. I enjoy ineptitude in all its forms. The only way the broadcast could have been improved in that respect is if Ed Wood could somehow come back from the dead to direct.

Jaws is the man!

I just hope that he doesn't get hit with Kornhiser's Idiot Stick before the start of the season...as a matter of fact I hope he tells Kornhiser to ****!

ESPN ACKNOWLEDGES SUNSHINE-FOR-VANDERBILT SWAP

It's now official. ESPN has announced that Joe Theismann is out and Ron Jaworski is in as the primary former-football-playing presence in the Monday Night Football booth.

ESPN cites no reason for the move.

The network also states that Theismann has been offered "a prominent football analyst job" with the network. As we suggested on Saturday night, this offer is likely motivated by the reality that Theismann remains under contract, and that if they don't use him they'll still likely have to pay him.

But if Theismann feels emasculated by the change and the manner in which it was handled, he might opt to resign. And ESPN would then owe him nothing.

Since Jaworski will be joiningMNF, he needs to have his own nickname. From this point forward, he will be referred to by us as "Gloria Vanderbilt," in reference to his habit of wearing glasses reminded us of the frames George Costanza once purchased from the collection of that same name.
