Don't know how many of you read Grantland on ESPN, but Chuck Closterman put together a 64 Movie Bracket tournament for the greatest sequel of all time.

Check it out... discuss amongst selves... play the game, show your choices and let us know your outrage at which bubble movies didn't make it.

My biggest beef with the tourney... HOW THE **** DOES RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II NOT MAKE THE TOURNEY?!

And how could they have Godfather II & Empire Strikes Back on the same side of the bracket? That should be the final right there, imo. :)

Huh. I just started reading (but didn't finish) a Klosterman book (he wrote the post in the link about the tournament).

Contrary to popular belief, are some great sequels that have been made over the years. TDK, Superman II, Rocky II, Godfather II, Empire, Christmas Vacation, etc...(and yes, Rambo II should be on that list).

How could you skip European Vacation? :)

Problem with this (and all brackets of this kind) is that it starts dependent on the opinions of the author. And of course, his revealing that he thinks that Godfather Part II is not only the best sequel but the best American film period could skew results. Unfortunately, there's no randomness and films like Jackass Part 2 gets on the tourney but not Rambo Part II.

That said, just looking at their #2's shows you either a) most sequels usually aren't very good or b) the guys putting together the brackets are idiots. :D

The most glaring omissions for me are X2 and Batman Returns. Don't get how Wayne's World 2, Jackass 2 and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey get on there. And then of course Return of the King gets a #8 seed and goes up against Empire Strikes Back! (For context, Wayne's World 2 got a #7 seed)

Here are the seeds:

#1:
The Godfather Part II
Empire Strikes Back
Dark Knight
Aliens

#2:
Rocky IV
Back to the Future II
Terminator II
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

#3:
The Return of the Jedi
Fast Five (really?)
Die Hard With a Vengeance
Rocky III

#4:
European Vacation
The Color of Money
Bad Boys II
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

#5:
Beverly Hills Cop II
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
Rocky II
Toy Story 3

#6:
The Two Towers
Superman II
The Dark Knight Rises
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

#7:
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear
Spider-Man 2
Ocean's Thirteen
Wayne's World 2

#8:
Jackass Number Two
The Return of the King
Christmas Vacation
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

Speechless at this list and it's omissions. Return of the King and Christmas Vacation have no business at #8--they should be up at least at #4.

Ghost Protocol? What? I didn't even bother finishing that movie and I had another 5 hours on left on the airplane with nothing to do.

And seeded the same a DK rises? Say what you want about that movie, but come on now!

Wow, maybe I should have watched more than 15 minutes.

Not really. I liked the movie quite a bit but if you didn't enjoy the first 15 minutes, there was no reason to continue. It's not like it becomes a completely different kind of movie 20 minutes into it.

Speaking of sequels, how awesome would a Braveheart II be?

Although the whole "drawn & quartered" thing might have made it tough for the screenwriters to overcome.
