Shaq injures knee in first-quarter fall
O'Neal taken for X-rays after falling awkwardly vs. Bulls

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:11 p.m. ET Feb. 22, 2005
CHICAGO - Miami center Shaquille O’Neal left the Heat’s game against Chicago on Tuesday night after landed awkwardly on Bulls forward Othella Harrington.

O’Neal fell on Harrington after the Heat star went up for an alley-oop pass from Dwyane Wade in the opening minutes. O’Neal stayed on the floor for several minutes holding his left knee before being helped off the floor and taken to the locker room for X-rays.

O’Neal is averaging 23.1 points and 10.6 rebounds in his first season with the Heat. On Sunday in the All-Star game in Denver, he had 12 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes to help the East beat the West 125-115.

Mavs to be without Dampier up to three weeks
DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Mavericks center Erick Dampier has a stress fracture in his right foot and is expected to miss two to three weeks.

The 6-foot-11 Dampier is averaging 9.5 points and 8.7 rebounds for the season, but he was producing far more than that over the eight games before injuring his foot Feb. 15 at Golden State. He opened that stretch with a career-high 26 rebounds and capped it with a season-high 19 points; in between, he had double figures in points and rebounds all but once.

The Mavericks won without him at Phoenix in their last game before the All-Star break. If he's out the full three weeks, he'd miss 12 more games.

Alan Henderson started at center against the Suns, and CalvinBooth saw extended action off the bench. Shawn Bradley played, too, and all three are likely to help pick up the slack. The Mavs are battling other injuries as Marquis Daniels is trying to come back from an appendectomy and Jerry Stackhouse has a nagging groin problem. The team wants to be cautious with Stackhouse's return because this is the second time the injury has taken him out of the lineup.

Shaquille O'Neal is reportedly out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ligament in his left knee during a game against the Chicago Bulls Tuesday night.

ESPN News, citing a Miami Herald report, made the announcement.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that O'Neal would sit for Wednesday's game against the Indiana Pacers, then return to Miami with the team, where he would undergo an MRI on Thursday.

O'Neal left the game against Chicago on Tuesday night after landing awkwardly early in the first quarter. He fell onto Bulls forward Othella Harrington, after going up for an alley-oop pass from Dwyane Wade, and stayed on the floor for several minutes - holding his knee. He was then helped off the floor and into the locker room. O'Neal played only two minutes against Chicago and didn't score. O'Neal, who missed a game in December due to a calf injury, is averaging 22.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in his first season with the Heat.

Wow, that's amazing if it's true. He never really did get in shape, Van Gundy was starting to grumble about his lack of effort, and now he sustains a season-ending injury. Maybe the Lakers weren't so stupid to hold off on that extension after all, huh?

An ESPN News report that Shaquille O'Neal was out for the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee apparently was a bit premature.

The network is now reporting that O'Neal has only suffered a strained knee.ESPN News made the original announcement earlier on Wednesday, citing a Miami Herald report.

The Associated Press was reporting that O'Neal would sit for Wednesday's game against the Indiana Pacers, then return to Miami with the team, where he would undergo an MRI on Thursday.
