Yesterday on 910, Tim Shea discussed Barbosa's last minute workout.

Said that Barbs came in with hip-flexor, but walked onto the court cold and began draining one nba 3 after another.

Said he was their second choice at #17 if Ainge had taken Zarko.

Declared Barbs has an unusual jumper, not just a hitch. His exact words were

"The fans are just going to have to see it. Its as if he has invented a new way of shooting the basketball."

"Every shot looks like its going to be a little short, and then it goes in."

"Its like he didn't want to chase the ball while practicing his shooting so he developed a shot that would send all the rebounds right back to him. He shoots for the back of the rim."

Rex Chapman was so excited about getting him, he was running around waving a Brazilian flag.

Tim Shea said that he definitely could be , not just a good NBA player, but a STAR in this league.

So the real question will be: Do you mess with the kids jump shot or just let it be?

I think we need to see how effective it can be against NBA competition. From what I have read, it sounds like he has a low release point and that it takes him a while to get the shot off. That might be ok in Brazil, but it may not work here. Hopefully his athleticism will allow him to get his shot off over his defender and we won't have to mess with it because it sounds pretty consistent.

Everyone I heard Thursday night said they had no intentions of messing with his shot. Everybody criticized Shawn Marion' shot, including myself, I am certainly glad now they didn't mess with it.

But a low release shot mechanics can only get you so far. Marion could be a lot more effective if he could release the ball at a higher point. It'd be even more crucial for a small guy like Barby to learn a more NBA-adequate shot mechanics, even if it meant that his performance might suffer the first year here. It's for his and the Suns long term good to do it.

If it aint broke dont fix it...

Attempting to change his shot can mess it up to the point where he cant shoot anymore.

How effective is it if they cant shoot as good?

Untill it becomes a problem leave it alone...

Learning good mechanics usually IMPROVES shooting. If he is shooting well with poor mechanics it indicates that he has excellent vision and court position awareness. It also indicates that he has the ability to be very consistent.

I believe improving his mechanics will help him. But that's just me. Of course, I would actually have to see the shot first.

It worked for Horny.

I don't think you should change his shooting if it's going in, but there is a difference between him and Larry Bird. Larry Bird shot from over his head making it even more difficult to block. Reportedly some teams were worried about Barbosa's shot because they thought he would have trouble getting a shot off in the first place. Casey Jacobsen had the same problem last year.

Hopefully Barbosa's shot won't be as slow as Jacobsen's. It was his biggest problem.

Magic Johnson had one of the slowest three point shots in NBA history, but it worked! As long as it goes in!! With a high percentage of course!!

Well, if there IS a problem, they'll know right away. I'm going to check out the LA summer leagues here and see if any of the guys are going to be on any of the teams (I'm assuming that Bo definitely will, and probably Penny too). Hopefully Barbosa and Zarko will latch on somewhere this summer too so I can check them out... :D
