I think the Coyotes putting Mike Ricci in #40 is lame, but if all the Valley teams are going to do a weak tribute to Pat Tillman (who I think would puke at the thought of all this), which Suns player will don the number?

I pick Jackson Vroman. He's a hard worker who will make the roster only if his grit overcomes his physical limitations.

Better not be Stephen Hunter. Dude might not even be here come January.

I don't see how Mike Ricci wearing #40 is lame, and i really doubt, from what i know of Pat Tilman, that he ever took himself so seriously as a professional athlete that he would "puke at the thought of it."

I read a rumor on another board that Vroman's off season weight training has added 20 pounds of muscle. Has anyone else heard anything like that?

It makes a difference. Vroman at 220 is strictly a foward, but at 240 he might see some minutes at center.

At this point, Lampe has shown little evidence that he is ready to produce much this season. It might make sense to accept the fact that Lampe is more of a foward than a center and work him strictly at PF backing up Amare. But if that happens, it means Vroman would get 14-16 minutes at center.

in the NBA today I don't doubt that someone athletic enough, long enough, and hard-working enough could be an effective backup center at 220 pounds. That said, the Phoenix Suns are probably in trouble if Vroman is getting any significant minutes at center.

Lampe hasn't shown that he's going to be a great center, but he was playing much better towards the end of this summer weeks. I think we'll have to wait until at least the preseason to know whether he can play significant minutes at center. He may be a power forward, but it's far too early to write him off at center.

I finally figured out who Vroman reminds me of: Kurt Rambis. He might be an inch taller (wasn't Rambis listed at 6' 9"?), but other than that, they seem pretty similar to me. Well, once Vroman gets to Rambis's level, that is.

If Vroman comes in at 6'10-6'11 240-250lbs he is going to play as long as he works hard which seems to be a given.

Jake plays as well and that's not exactly because of his amazing talent.

Yeah if you want #40 sitting on the bench all day. Thats kind of a weak tribute I say the Suns should do something else.

If Vroman comes in at 6'10-6'11 240-250lbs

I saw Vroman on TV in a couple of games. 6' 10" is generous, even by the standards of "NBA height," and I'll believe 240 when I see it. 6' 11", 250 is absolutely out of the question unless he does a lot more growing.

Tillman joined the military because of a very personal need to be the defender, not the defended. He refused all media contact because he understood he was part of a much larger body of soldiers, not Rambo. Even as a player, he despised those that wanted to give him what he considered undue attention. His family has ardently resisted being part of any kind of Tillman tribute, because, they say, he would have hated that kind of stuff.

Yes, I think Tillman would be sick at the sight of being put on this kind of pedastal. While it may honor our wishful *image* of the man (hero, savior), I think it's disrespectful when those that are doing the honoring know very well Tillman avoided this kind of stuff.

Notice that his shoes gave him a 1.5" bump, which is more than most of the other people who were measured. I'd guess that he switched into lower shoes by the time I saw him in a game.

Don't you think he'd be equally sick of people going on and on about how he was so noble that being posthumously lionized would make him sick?

I think his own family members commented on how Tillman would not have wanted the fanfare.

Of course, based on that, what would his opinion be on what you just wrote? Or what I'm writing now for that matter...

most people's shoes gave them about a 1" boost in height. That's pretty good if your noticing that .5" difference. :)

Vroman's standing reach is just 8'9.5". That's not even very good for a power forward much less a center.

Ricci contacted the Tillman family, and they let him use #40 in honor of Tillman.
