The Philadelphia 76ers were viewed as the major winners of the 2024 offseason when they brought in 9-time All-Star Paul George in free agency on a 4-year $212 million deal. After a 2023-24 season in which he averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 47.1% from the floor and 41.3% from deep, it seemed like a fantastic move.

However, George was riddled with injuries all season long and was ruled medically unable to play after just 41 games in his first year in Philadelphia. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and shot 43% from the floor and 35.8% from deep. It has been a complete disappointment for George and the Sixers as both sides look to move forward.

With that being said, amid a disastrous season for the Sixers, one has to wonder if George should be moved in the offseason. It's time for a pros and cons list:

Pro of trading George

The biggest pro is that the Sixers would get off his contract. He is due:

  • $51,666,090 in 2025-26
  • $54,126,380 in 2026-27
  • $56,586,670 in 2027-28 (player option)

If the Sixers could unload that contract, it would be a big help in creating some financial relief going forward. Philadelphia would undoubtedly have to attach a draft pick to him, but that is something President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey and Co. would have to consider. It might be worth it for a player who's aging and showed a lost step in the 2024-25 season as his field goal attempts at the basket have dropped.

Cons of trading George

One has to acknowledge the fact that George did have a terrific 2023-24 season in his final year with the Los Angeles Clippers which was just two seasons ago. While, yes, he is aging, one has to believe that if he can just get healthy, he can get back to that level. If the Sixers can get a healthy George--albeit a big "if" at this point in his career--then everything they were hoping to accomplish in 2024-25 can come to fruition in 2025-26.

Also, and one final thought, the Sixers don't want to end this Big 3 experiment too early without giving them a chance to bounce back. They should try again in 2025-26 and if it still isn't working in November/early December, then they make a decision from there. The Sixers, for now, should keep George in tow and try again with the hope everybody can stay healthy in 2025-26.
