For starters:

We've Been Handed a Gift. Make the Most of it.
A few game backs, I dared envision the following scenario: (1) we don't draw Dallas as our opening playoff opponent and maintain crowd advantage, (2) we don't draw Philly or the Giants early. (3) we minimize the possibility of playing in icy weather by drawing Carolina instead of the Giants or Philly. (4) instead of facing the Giants at the Meadowlands in mid-January, Philly wins and our racehorse offense gets to compete at our house in 72-degree weather.

All of this has happened. It is highly unlikely that the football gods will smile so kindly on this franchise again in our lifetime. We've been handed a gift. Let's not blow it.

Making New Fans Feel Welcome
With success will be a flood of casual, unsophisticated and fair weather fans who will now jump on the Cardinal bandwagon. They will frustrate us all (by saying dumb things, not acting "like they've been there" and at the first hint of adversity, calling for wholesale firings, becoming apathetic and/or in extreme cases, quitting the team altogether).

Be patient oh ye Cardinal regulars - the hope is that, with success and a little educating , some of these flighty newcomers will be tranformed into knowledgeable loyal permanent Cardinal fans. It's the way franchises are built.

Watching Coach Wiz take that lap around BOA Field shaking hands with the Cardinal faithful is a promising sign that something special is starting to happen.

We can help it happen by not looking down on newer Cardinal fans who didn't sweat through the bad times like we did. Instead we should make them feel welcome - like they're being let in on something special. When they say or do dumb things, avoid the temptation to belittle them or excercise a little patience and forbearance instead.

We should always be sold out in 6-minutes; And there should be a ring of loyal Cardinal rooters at every away stadium. How cool would that be?

Very nicely said.

I especially appreciated what you said about welcoming new fans. My brother's been in this state a whooole lot longer than I have but was never a fan. In fact he did nothing but shake his head when I became one. Saturday night, seconds after we'd won, I turned to him and said, "Now do you believe? Do you realise that we are going to play for the NFC Championship next week?" (At this point the fog is beginning to clear.) "Do you realise that if we win next week we are going to the Super Bowl?" (The film is gone from his eyes.) The look on his face was incredible. Like he'd just heard the news about salvation.

I see this happening in a lot of places. And...

:newcards::newcards::newcards:WE DO THIS TOGETHER!!!

Newbies included.

I've pretty much turned my neighbor (well helped turn) him from a 49er fan to a Cards fan. One at a time.

Making new fans feel welcome is one thing (and very important too) but surely if they used to support another team you have to look at them with suspicious eyes? I could understand if they have never really picked a team, but switching teams is the ultimate sin IMO.

19 years ago, after being a Bears fan since I was a kid, I switched...when Ditka got launched by the MCaskey clowns I decided it was time to get on the bandwagon of the hometown team... I live here because I like it better than where I came from... I have had season tickets ever since and I NEVER feel that my decision was wrong in any way...if the Bears are playing, I still cheer for them, but if they play the Cardinals... not a chance I support the Bears to even play a decent game...JMHO

Awesome post! Truly the football gods have been looking down on us. Let's keep this thing rolling. I have been waiting since '68 and I can just taste the Superbowl. I have always said I did not care (but I would) if they won, just get there. Can you imagine an all day feast of listening (that we have no chance) about our Cards.

Football gods, one more game please!!!!
