Side note anybody else notice the rule change and how it hurts the no huddle?

Was really evident last night with the Colts offense. Because the umpire is now in the offensive backfield instead of the defensive backfield it takes MUCH longer for the refs to be ready to let the offense snap the ball again? Manning was flagged twice for snapping the ball too quickly and I think that may be something that happens quite a bit while the refs get used to this.

It made me wonder as much as Kurt liked to use the hurry up or no huddle, might he have been rendered far less effective this year anyways simply because of that change in where the umpire lines up?

That's going to have to change then if it's affecting top tier QBs and making games less exciting.

They actually do go back there, but only in the last 2 minutes of each half.

So teams running no huddle outside of that time get punished. I suspect we'll see a change because it just isn't possible for the ump to set the ball and get
back behind the backfield without taking longer.

I think Kurt would have given the umpire, the Jumbo Tron, and the sky as many Death Stares as Peyton did last night. Yes.

Just a total jackass rule!!! Sometimes the NFL tries to overthink things, trying to change the greatest game on the planet!!! This, 18 game schedule, overseas football, the tuck rule, etc. Whats next?

Lets just play freaking football!!!

What was the reason for it again?

Why not just have multiple high def cameras and multiple judges on the side keeping track of things like that?

It's so the umpire isn't in the way. They used to have to constantly duck because NFL teams were using the ump as a pick(offenses were) and defenders were running into them.

so they moved them from behind the defense, to behind the offense. But now when they put the ball down, they have to then jog back behind the offense and that delay is the problem.

If this is how it's going to be I think they should blow the play dead if the Ump isn't in position. There should be no flag on the play. Hell the QB should be looking over the defense before the snap, not looking behind him to make sure said umpire is finally where he needs to be.

It wouldn't have bothered the Cards no huddle. They didn't snap the ball until 1-2 seconds were left on the play clock. The no-huddle, no-hurry up offense you might say.

Yeah. Never could figure out why go no huddle and then not quick snap.

Every week the TV announcers would talk about it. Why run the no huddle if you are going to let the defense get set. Some have said it wasn't to catch the defense before they could get set but to keep the D from making situational substitutions.

Ok, I get that. I don't agree with the premise but I understand what your saying.
