Because of the franchise tag, Dansby cant be re-signed until after the season. He's gonna want Top 5 LB money, which is a lot more than what Calvin Pace got from the Jets this year (22 mil guaranteed).

Yeah I know. The post was before he blew up last season. He might be Top 5 LB right now

So you bumped a almost year old thread to show you were right? I'm okay with that, your post was positive and I think you were right.

Yeah I guess I am tooting my own horn a little. I like Dansby like most people felt about Anquan over the past few years. I almost feel he is Top 5 Lb / and possibly a Top 2-3

1 Demeco Ryans
2 Karlos Dansby
3 Patrick Willis
4 Brian Urlacher / Been banged up recently
5 Will Witherspoon
6 Thomas Howard
7-10 Jon Beason, JD Williams, Ernie Simms, Ray Lewis

I expect him to get 4-5 Sacks / 4 Picks / 4 Forced Fumbles this year along with shutting down the middle of the field.

This has been twice now, I have looked at this thread and my heart has started racing a little, thinking that we signed him.

Top 5 LB is 17-18 Mill gauranteed. What Calvin Pace got was pass rusher money not LB money. Big difference.

Bump on Dansby and the Cards should Franchise him. If he does not take the 5yr 35-40 Mil then trade him for a 1st rounder.

The guy is a Top 10 LB in the league and needs the franchise tag. There were 119 reasons in the regular season. Even if we do not sign him to a deal the last thing I want to see is Dansby walk for no compensation ala Boston, Plummer, Miller, etc etc

Report: Patriots to put franchise tag on Cassel
10 hours, 59 minutes ago

NFC Wild Card Chase

Week 16: Locks to Win

Fantasy: 4 Great Pickups
More NFL Videos FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—The New England Patriots plan to put the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassel, according to a published report.

Cassel’s future hinges heavily on Tom Brady’s recovery from a season-ending knee injury in the first game this season.

Franchising Cassel would keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent and give the Patriots an option if they feel Brady might not be ready for the start of the 2009 season. If they’re confident that Brady will be ready, they’d be able to trade Cassel.

The Patriots’ plan for Cassel was first reported by the National Football Post.

“It’s been talked about quite a bit (publicly),” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Monday. “We won’t be commenting on it until something happens. And if we don’t use it (the tag), we probably won’t comment.”

David Dunn, Cassel’s agent, did not return telephone calls seeking comment.

Without a franchise tag, Cassel would become an unrestricted free agent starting Feb. 27. The period in which a team can designate a franchise player is Feb. 5 to Feb. 19.

A team can put the franchise tag on one player a year. It would have to pay that player at least the minimum of the average of the five highest salaries of players at the same position, estimated at $14 million for Cassel.

Cassel hadn’t started in four years at Southern California and three years with the Patriots until the second game of his fourth NFL season, one week after Brady was hurt. Cassel started the remaining 15 games for the Patriots, who missed the playoffs despite finishing at 11-5.

He completed 327 passes for 516 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His 3,693 yards passing were fourth-most in the AFC, and his 63.4 completion percentage was third-best in Patriots history.

We can not let this guy walk. Some team will be willing to give something for him. Even though we franchise him it does not mean we have to get to 1st round picks

At this point, if all guys hit free agency, the top 5 UFA's would be:
1-Albert Haynesworth
2-Julius Peppers-probably tagged
3-Cassel-tagged
4/5-Suggs/Dansby

either way, he'll be in high demand if he hits the open market. Casserly said he'd be the top LB ahead of guys like Ray Lewis.

I am loving what Karlos did last week - dude was everywhere - but I am going to need to see it again on the road before I change my line of thought in wanting Suggs with karlos's money.

You can franchise as many times as you want. The rules are as follows -

1st and 2nd time - Top 5 average at your position or 120% of players previous salary. Which ever would pay him highest.
3rd time - Top 5 average of the QB position, even if you are a K being franchised if you get franchised for a 3rd time you get top 5 QB money. Or 120% of previous salary which ever is higher.

So while you can franchise as much as you want there comes a point in the rules when it just isnt feasible cap wise.

As for Dansby if franchised again 120% will be about 9.75 Mill.

You franchise him again and he's going to get what, 17M+ guaranteed? (this year and next) That would have been about as much as he would have gotten with a long term deal in guaranteed money or close to it.

I just don't see them franchising him again. I think they will either resign him, or let him walk like Big. (mistake)

Dansby is not worth 9.75 mil. I want guys who are going to show up 14-15 games a year. Everyone has a no show now and then. Look at Aberham (sp) lst week with Atl. Even then he came up with a big play late in the game that should have given ATL a chance. He put their defense in a good position with a 3rd and 16 but their LBs blew it by letting Spach run free.

Dansby shows up 3-5 games and is ordinary the other games. Dockett is the same way.

Abraham isn't a good example. He pretty much disappeared in the playoff game.

They aready told Dansby that they wouldn't franchise him again. Doesn't mean that they won't but I seriously doubt that they would do it again.

KD is not worth 9.75M even via a threat to trade for picks, it'll never happen. He's not that good.

Best MLB/ILB in football IMHO Ray Lewis is the only one worth that because of his consistancy, leadership, gamechanging ability. Maybe Urlacher for the same reason. Special players, KD isn't that. That kind of money is saved for the elite pass rushers.

Lets give KDs money to Suggs, pay Quan 8M/yr for 5 years, KD will take 6M/year for 4/5 yrs or he's a UFA , and hopefully not in the division.
