I have not watched Ep5.
From the Adam Savage Video you can see more of the interior of the vault and tell you why is designed like that and also can see from the model what is after the other door.

Also why would you fudge with mechanical so much, they are the ones that keep the lights on, they know metal working they can weld build weapons, spring loaded poo made out of scrap material etc. You close the running water and the toilets to the upper mids level that is enough to create total chaos.

Unless they are not and I think someone else is producing the steam that moves the generator and they might have another way of getting power supply to the silos.
No way the founders built the silos with zero redundancy on power supply and the biggest single point of failure ever seen in human history.

We now know there is a second power supply in IT. I'm betting SOP is to crush mechanical, use the IT supply, and work to get mechanical back up to speed.

The secondary power supply is very minimal doesn't even keep the lights on.
Ep 5 gives something away about the power. I think you can back feed from other silos or another power supply.

I had read that 2 more seasons allows them to finish the books. I haven't read them yet though so I don't know how far into them they are at this time for if that's plausible or not.

Latest episode is absolutely NUTS (in a very good way). Man-o-man I am loving this. Robbins continues to be the kickass character. I HATE BERNARD!!!!

I think there are 3 of them and that s2 was supposed to get into the 2nd book. That's just from what I've picked up on various forums though so I can't speak to how reliable the sources are.

I'm with @UncleChris too about the Robbins and Bernard. Great role and character.
