This says something about the value of the #1 pick in this draft. It is not worth as much in previous drafts.

There appears to be a cluster of players fairly well equal 1-6. Philly wanted a specific PG to balance their roster so they moved up.

Ainge has played things right in the press, he's talking up what they got from Philly which could help build a relationship with them to swing more deals. I don't see it as the #1 pick having less value. This trade isn't that different than years back when Orlando swapped 1 and 3 with Golden State, Webber for Penny.

I don't think we are dealing with Chris Weber and Penny Hardaway talent in this draft. Nor Kareem or David Robinson talent either.

Danny Ainge said there's a good chance the player they take at No. 3 is the same player they would've taken at No.1.

Yeah there's lots of scuttlebutt that the Celtics were NOT impressed with Fultz during his workouts, but he killed it for the Lakers. So the suspicion is Boston decided they wanted Jackson or Tatum, and spread the rumor that the Lakers were packaging their pick and Randle to get Boston's pick and take Fultz. That pushed Philly to go after Fultz and as Ainge said they likely wind up taking the guy they wanted anyways, who I think will be Jackson.

Maybe it'll play out like that miserable movie "Draft Day" and the Sixers will stun everyone and take Dennis Smith first overall because Colangelo watched a highlight reel of his on the eve of the draft.

Everyone thought they were taking Dunn last year. Ainge is unpredictable and has a crummy track record in the draft. Jackson would be another wing to add to Brown, Crowder and Smart so not sure how that'd work.

Great player but they need a shooter too. But I do think when Ainge says we're getting the guy at 3 we would have taken at 1 he probably means Jackson.

I think they were enamored with Fultz until they worked him out and saw he didn't shoot well in a workout designed to take him out of his comfort zone. Then he went to the Lakers who put him in the workout he'd been training years for, and he looked great.

My guess is Ainge used that to get Philly to make the deal.

I think the whole "we're getting the guy at 3 we would have taken at 1" that Ainge is saying is referencing a trade, not a player they're drafting. For the Celtics they need someone other than IT who can create their own offense. It's been 10 years since they formed their Big 3 and won their last title. They have the pieces to assemble another big 3 this summer, with just their picks alone. In addition to having the #3 pick they could have as many as 7 first rounders between 2018 and 2019. Here is a link to the picks they own right now...

Those picks in addition to parting with one or two of their young players they could be in position to actually challenge Cleveland.
