I delivered the AZRepublic back in those days to that whole neighborhood. There is an old Apt Complex on the east side of 44th just south of Oak that was on my route. One of my customers in that complex was JD Hill.

Few people remember just how good JD Hill was (and how BAD, but that's a different story). Watching Joe Spagnola throw the ball to JD Hill is one of my favorite early teen memories. I was devastated when he was asked to leave the football team (twice maybe if the rumors are true). World of talent though, could have been/should have been one of the all time greats. He also starred for us in Track & Field and I think he played baseball for Winkles one year too.

Depending on which complex, I think that is now a vacant lot.

Absolutely, there are lots of examples over the years of deals that fell through being MUCH better for the team than the ones that happened.

There are those that were the opposite too>

Coin flip for Lew Alcindor. The trade of Barkley for Mutombo that was rescinded by the league.

As a Phoenician for 35 years, I consider myself an "almost" native (even though I was married with two sons when we moved). I was a desert rat the day we arrived. Especially with the house we bought in NE Phoenix with a 40-ft. pool in the backyard.

You guys who attended HS here, with your memories, provided special feelings.

I wondered why they called them Arcadia doors here, but no one from the West or East coasts knows what that means. Thank you for sharing your memories and info.

Just checked google earth. yup. Vacant lot. Oh well. I spent my high school years playing in pickup basketball games at Pierce Park. At least I brought it back to bball.

I lived just south of Thomas and 48th st so it was East High for me. Only the old guys actually remember East High or Gerard Hs.

Thomas Road is the dividing line in that area.

I didn't know that. I lived just North of 56th St and Thomas when I went to Arcadia HS. Before that I was at Ingleside Elementary from 4th-8th grade. We then moved to Scottsdale where I went to Saguaro HS (David Spade's HS) for my junior and senior years. I didn't know they had closed down Scottsdale HS. That's where my brother went.

Go Suns! (for itlnsunsfan)

If you're driving west on Indian School from Scottsdale, you'll see the "Welcome to Phoenix" sign just past 60th Street. You'll pass Ingleside Middle School on the left (also in the Scottsdale School District) before you pass Arcadia at 48th.

I had forgotten about Arcadia doors. Not exactly the same, but it reminds me of people calling a sun room an Arizona room.

There's no doubt that Arcadia is part of the Scottsdale School district. I was just questioning whether it was part of the district in the 60's.

Oh yeah, I wasn't challenging anyone. Just picking up on the earlier comment saying that the city line was around 64th in that part of town. Schools like Scottsdale High, East High etc. all predate me so I can't speak to the 60s.

But yes, I am glad that the Suns offer for Gordon was matched...!

Little known fact. The area around 56th st and Thomas used to be way outside the city of Phoenix. It was a little town situated between Phoenix and Scottsdale named Ingleside.

Oh feel free to challenge. I have absolutely no facts on my side, merely a faulty memory.

You guys got me curious. I drove by the old house today. Wow things have changed. My parents lived there 27 years.

It's hilarious to me the turn this thread took based on it's title.

Yep, I have fond memories of growing up near 56th St & Thomas. Good times. I loved being right behind the grocery store and drug store. I can't even remember what grocery store it was anymore. I'm thinking the drug store was Ben Franklin's or something like that.

It seemed so far away when I was a kid but now that I think about it, that was only a mile and a half by car from where I lived the first 10 years of my life (68th & Osborn).

That doesn't ring a bell. Maybe it was an Alpha Beta. I think that may be it.
Alpha Beta, then ABCO . . . and Bayless . . . and later Lucky - the low-priced leader. Those were the days.

And Valley National Bank, with its outdoor temperature signs . . . (which became Bank One, then Chase). And First National Bank (which became First Interstate, then Wells Fargo).

And Diamonds department store (which became Dillard's) and Goldwater's (later Robinson's-May).

Why didn't they leave well enough alone?

I first visited Phoenix in 1970, so I don't go back as far as some of you guys. But, still, you brought back memories of some of the good ol' days in the Valley.

Hey, to many, these will be the good ol' days 30 years from now. :)
