Girls wrestling is a rapidly growing high school sport, and Smithsburg sophomore Rileigh Romberger is at the forefront of it.
When she steps on the mat, it's showtime.
Competing for Team Maryland at the second annual Border War girls wrestling event Saturday at Washington High School, Romberger dominated in both of her bouts at 120 pounds, helping Maryland defeat Virginia 34-27 and West Virginia 39-23 to capture the team title in the tri-meet.
"It was very exciting," Romberger said. "It was the first year Maryland was invited to it, and we took the plaque. Last year, it was just Virginia and West Virginia.
"A lot of people in Maryland put a lot of work into it. The level of wrestling in Maryland has definitely increased."
Romberger received the invitation to compete in the event for Team Maryland after she won the MPSSAA girls state title at 120 pounds on March 8.
"I was very excited to be given a chance to join," she said. "But I was a little bit nervous because I haven't wrestled too many people out of the state."
At the Border War, both opponents she faced also won state titles this year, and they were no match for her.
Against Virginia, Romberger built a lead on Hailey Turner before pinning her in the third period, and against West Virginia, she rolled to a 17-3 major decision over Kirclyn Coleman.
"After that, I feel like I'm capable of going to bigger tournaments outside of the state to try to win and get better," Romberger said.
