honestly at this point i think there is only one team that knows who is going to be there when they draft, Milwaukee. after that it is wide open. Joe Graham or Fran Vázquez or Antoine Wright might be there at 21, there are so many questions and guessing in this draft that i think it is perty clear that we will get a nba player out of it.

Man I still haven't seen him play, my computer sucks, the most I saw was him holding ball LOL.

If he's Drafted, IMO he needs to be in League next year... what does stashing someone in Europe help? The contract is only $1 million and I wouldn't want to gamble that you could find 2 role players that cheap... the Suns need to add players, not a player. The Draft Pick and 1 more decent FA... and then 2nd Rounder and other reserve players.

Taking Petro is similar to taking one of the HS guys. You cannot really expect much right away.

The challenge for Petro is switching from a league that penalizes physical play and going to one that rewards it. He is very physcial and might thrive. Or he may struggle with the same adjustment every other Euro big man goes through when being fouled all the time.

Petro is IMPRESSIVE!
He is much smoother than Hunter with his offensive moves. Actually, I don't know which current NBA center is comparable regarding athletism. Maybe Dalembert? From videos, I think he is at least as athletic as Taft but 3-4 inces taller. I don't even care who else is on the board when we pick. So, move up and secure him!

I liked what most of what I saw from Petro in the video, but remember that those were his best 4-5 plays probably of the last euro-season (maybe his career). He's probably a lot more raw than those couple of moves he made in the video.

Exactly! When you look at all of those videos 99% of them look like great guys that are going to come in and make a big difference right away. Honestly, I didn't think he looked any more smooth than Hunter. One of the knocks on Petro is that he isn't much of a leaper. He does move well though.

I guarantee we could put together a video of Hunter from this season making him look every bit as good as Petro. We could probably put together a video of his days from Depaul-Orlando doing the same.

I'm not against taking him if they think he really is going to be good, but I'm not getting overly excited just from that video.

Good points. It makes me more excited just because I've never heard of/seen this guy before and it adds yet another promising player that could be available when the Suns draft. You can't have enough picks in this draft it seems! Very excited for tomorrow!

One of the reasons Petro is likely to be on the board at 21 is that he has been scouted and his flaws are well documented. He has not been a superstar in Europe or even a consistent producer. Maybe things would change in the NBA, but maybe no.

Draft Express

Weaknesses

Rebounding seems to be his biggest flaw right now, he just doesn't have very good fundamentals when it comes to boxing out his man and establishing position, although he has all the physical tools needed to excel here. Part of that will come with better coaching, but he also lacks a certain degree of fire to his game, not always looking like he is giving 100% and fading from time to time in terms of his intensity on the court. His motor isn't bad, he just loses his focus at times and makes youthful mistakes, something that hopefully he will improve on as he continues to mature.

Defensively, he can block shots due to his size, wingspan and leaping ability, but still needs to improve his timing and court awareness a bit, as well as using his body better to stay out of foul trouble. Man to man, he uses his hands a little too much, which is where a lot of his fouls come from, but he shouldn't have a problem getting better here with good coaching and experience because he can move his feet quite well.

Offensively, like most athletic teenage 7 footers he is still a bit limited besides simple moves like the catch and dunk and an excellent little baby hook shot. His footwork could stand to improve and he would benefit from adding more moves to his arsenal in the paint. He has all the physical attributes in the world to be a dominating player inside the paint, but needs to learn how to use them better.

Overall his feel for the game is not off the charts. He struggles at times with set plays in the half court offense, like on pick and rolls for examples. His improvement has been slower than expected the last two years mainly due to a lack of playing time. Sometimes his team will give him big minutes and he'll be very productive, and sometimes he'll come in for a few minutes at a time or won't play at all.

Wow, what I saw of Petro was he IS athletic! Putting back offensive rebounds with Amare ferocity in the video I saw. If Diogu is more athletic than this, yeah I would be disappointed if we didn't get him either! :D

on the ASR last night I saw some skinny short arms on him. Its well known that I am an Ike fan, but at least I know what we will get from him. Petro? less than impressive stats in a league in which is how good?

In the old days, a No. 21 draft pick would draw yawns from Suns fans. But as the club goes into today's NBA draft — the last one in which high school players will be eligible and with all the foreign prospects to choose from — this draft will have plenty of players.

And that means the Suns could end up with a somebody who'll get playing time in the upcoming season.

"The draft will be deep," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "That's good for us."

The Suns, of course, are eternally searching for a big man.

This might be doubly true if the Suns can't nail down the trade of Quentin Richardson for Kurt Thomas because of lingering questions over insurance to fully cover Richardson's contract. The Suns might be inclined to go for a shot-blocking center such as the 7-foot Johan Petro of France.

More Petro speculation! I keep bumping into this on the net. I tell you, any young center that could play his career with JJ and Amare would be really exciting. Or, I would even take one of those tall PGs in the draft. The 6'6" and above guys! Can you see that? Coupled with JJ! What a tall back court! ;)

Chad Ford - predicting the draft

21. PHOENIX SUNS Johan Petro
FRANCE | CENTER
HEIGHT: 7-1 | WEIGHT: 250 | AGE: 19Petro has the size and talent of a lottery pick, but he's been very slow to develop, which has caused some NBA teams to worry. Petro is probably another year or two away from helping a team, even if he does develop. However, if he ever gets it, he could be the perfect center in the Suns' system down the road. Don't be surprised if Nate Robinson also gets a look here. He's a perfect fit in their super-speed offense.

Alternate Picks: Nate Robinson, Martynas Andriuskevicius, Andray Blatche, Ersan Ilyasova
