I don'[t like Elway. When he refused to play for the Colts it had a lot to do with Frank Kush was the coach at the time. Kush was a tough coach but I always admired him. He certainly put ASU on the map.
Interesting now that his son goes to ASU. Kind of funny.
Cutler acted like a human being. Can we call it sissy? Yep. But if that's the case, a whole lot of players who talk about feelings are sissies then. So it isn't isolated, but he's taking the brunt of it. He represents probably 1/4 to 1/2 of NFL players. In that if put in a similar situation, that many would act this way. We may not like it, but it is how things currently are. (And not just in the NFL)
The Elway situation he was willing to say 'he won't play in the NFL'. IMO it is a bit more extreme for a 'undrafted' player (via he wasn't yet drafted) to try to dictate what team he would go to, and have it back at a time where players weren't like this (and wasn't socially acceptable to be whiny like players are) imo was a bigger situation than Cutler's. The shock value of what's worse. Elway in 83 or Cutler in 09. Elway would win hands down on what was a worse thing to do.
Also Elway benefits from us looking at him from 2009 eyes, not 1985 or so which is where we are with Cutler.
It's a couple of years before my time, but before 'the drive' in 86, and remembering some of his early year stats, Elway didn't appear on the surface even as good as Cutler statwise.
Again, trading in the nfl is also a different beast. In other leagues, baseball, basketball, hockey; trades are routine. Players switch around via trades all the time, and it's part of the business.
In the NFL trades are rare. Although they have been picking up in the last couple of seasons, the NFL for the most part is a non-trade league. Players don't worry about being traded, and none of their peers or those that came before them had to deal with this and thus it's a new beast in the NFL, or at least a continuing uncommon one.
Cutler was treated like crap. I'd like to see how Eli Manning would respond if say Coughlin was fired, Denny Green was hired (lol) and proceeded to try to trade Manning. Actually that's not a real fair comparison. Cutler is still a few years younger.
So you got a guy who by all accounts is one of the best young qb's in a league starved for young star qb's. Maybe he does have a 5 cent head, but he still has a million dollar arm. He still has all the tools.
It had to be a shock. This is the sort of thing QBs at 30-33 should expect in calmer terms, like the drafting of an heir apparent. This kid is new, still ascending, doing a fairly good job, and sometimes an outstanding job, and is being bandied about in trade talks. That had to be a shock.
Then when given a chance to backtrack, the brand new coach who hadn't coached a single event with the Broncos, basically said he wouldn't backtrack. A guy who was probably in college when Cutler was probably a freshman hs QB.
Yes he's the coach, and has the power, but that doesn't mean how he weilds it is right, or smart, or wise. It just means he has the authority to weild it.
My guess is, he won't be wielding it for long.
If a book is written on how not to start off as an NFL head coach. This guy surely didn't read it. Because he's done exactly what such a book says DON'T DO.
Did Cutler look like an donkey? Yep, but understandable
But his coach looked like an even bigger fool than Cutler looked like a donkey.
Either way, if you are a Broncos fans, having a bunch of fools and donkey's around isn't a good sign, unless it's a rodeo.
