Thanks for the article Cards. It definitely goes with what Whis has been saying, there will be competition for the starting positions!

I also think it says alot about Hood that he would still come here knowing he has to compete. I think that's only going to make Hood, Rolle and Green better.

The Cards, who have already re-signed running back Marcel Shipp and special teamer Hanik Milligan, also are trying to re-sign linebacker
Monty Beisel.

He has stated it in a number of articles. Especially when he first got here. I'm at work so I can't spend the time to find them....but I am almost positive he talked about this.

Rugby -- the Cards signed their first free agent less than a week ago.

How could Wis talk about them being starters when they hadnt even signed them?

I know Wis talked about wanting to create competition -- but I am certain that Wis hasnt annointed any of the free agent signees as starters.

My worry is that Whiz was preaching competition, and yet has named 2 FA's starters after signing them, but I guess that is part of the Free Agent game.

I would like to see Hood compete for the starting CB job, same goes with Al Johnson, and Holt
Whoa! This is what Hood said and not necessarily what Wiz said. I heard on SIRIUS today that indications were that Hood and Green would be in open competion for the starting spot.

Also (in passing) on SIRIUS - that Cards were in serious negotiations to get the deal done with Gandy.

My question is, Are they bringing Gandy in to play Guard or Tackle. If they think he can play Tackle then I say no thank you! If Gandy can be had for cheap then I might think about it.

Holt is also expected to start. It was written in the newspaper. And, when I heard Holt talk on the radio he clearly thought he was the starter.

I listened to Holt on the Gambo/Ash show and he specifically said that he was going to compete with Francisco for the starting position.

He did. But, he didn't exactly argue the point when Gambo and Asher kept repeating that he will start did he? I think it's one of those "You'll have to compete (wink - wink, nudge - nudge)" type of deals.

Throw in Wilson's comments too. All he talked about was how Holt was going to be a great leader in the huddle and on the field for the younger players. He didn't seem to think there was going to be much competition.

Johnson, Holt and Hood will all have to compete for a starting job. However just from looking at what they bring compared to who they are competing with, it isn't a stretch of the imagination to say that all three will be starting for the Cardinals.

The Cards gave Hood a signing bonus rather than a roster bonus, so the salary-cap hit that the team takes from the bonus will be prorated over the life of the contract and will save the Cardinals some of their dwindling cap space.

Those cheap Bidwills and their dumb yes man, Rod Graves! Don't they know they could have just pocketed more cap cash by going the roster bonus way again? Good God, how is Bickley going to be able to spin this one?

And, again, please, no Mike Gandy. I haven't seen him play as a pro but I saw all of his Notre Dame games and unless he got a talent transplant, he's useless to us.

I have seen him play tackle as a pro and believe me the transplant did not occur....

I would take him as a guard. He is a good run blocker.

In my ESPN draft guide Todd Mcshay takes a cheap shot at Bidwill saying quote" Look for the Cardinals to trade down from the number five spot in the draft. It took Dennis Green everything in his power to talk Bidwill into not trading down out of the top ten to save money."

They also said it would be wise for Whiz to take a page out of Dennys book and not let Graves pick the players. " Rumor has it Graves watches very little tape on the prospects" Rod Graves is hungry to gain back his power after being run over by Green for three years.

They have us getting Adams or Anderson first round. Staley or Ugoh second round. Tenard Jackson third round.

Note: I dont think Todd knows what he is talking about taking that shot at Bidwill. We paid Rice, Wadsworth, Big and Thomas Jones in the top ten.

Here is a quote by a scout on Buster Davis which I liked. " He may not look pretty and your nuts might shrink when it comes time to draft him but I am telling you in 4 years he will be coveted on the open market. He makes every tackle."

That's such a BS thing to spew. The Cards have had a top 10 pick 14 out of 18 years here in Arizona, and one of those other years would have been top 10 but we picked Timm Rosenbach in the Supplemental Draft. Two of those years we didn't even have a pick. So only one year since the Cards have been in AZ they've had a first rounder hasn't been in the top 10. Out of all those times they've traded down once. Once. Cheap bastards.

According to Jurecki, Gandy will be brought in to compete with Milford Brown for one of the OG positions.

Exactly. Starting lineups in March aren't worth the paper they are written on.

My hunch is competition thing is just pillow talk. The three we signed are coming in to play. We would not throw the money at them if they were not going to start.

Why would they need to frontload this contract? They've already gobbled up all of our cap space on purpose, as planned.

It all depends on his role.

He's a 1½ season starter at Buffalo's blindside LT. He certainly wasn't great, but based on his play there I dont' see any reason why he shouldn't be a solid back-up at our frontside LT.

That's what I'm thinking/hoping. If so, at the very least, his presence could remove some of the pressure to pass on a better player and reach for an offensive lineman in the draft.

Just curious but (in accordance with Grimm's "play the best 5 linemen" philosophy) is Milford Brown versatile enough to shift to LT with Gandy perhaps playing LG?

It won't happen. But maybe it should. Make it a totaly open competetion and not hand anything to anyone. That said, Rolle should elevate his game right out of the box this year. If he can't , then........

Agreed. Whiz already believes that Rolle was a victim of bad coaching. I think he is a victim of bad hips, and hands made of stone.

He must have dropped 5 INTs. A few of them could have gone the other way for 6.

A lot here believe Milford could play LT.

I definately do not agree with that assumption! Looking at his feet, there is IMO no way that he could do that. He hardly kicks when setting up in pass protection and meets him man on the LOS to block him with pure power. He doesn't have the feet to play LT. I don't know why you would want to shift him, though. He was awesome at G. Without doubt our best O-Lineman IMO.

If Elton gets his act together, he's a guy that could do it, actually. He looked very fluid in pass-protection.

Ross is definately an option, too. He's not as bad as everyone his making him out to be. He is not worth the big contract that he signed, but he is IMO able to do a decent job, if the interior line holds up. He was put in a no-win situation last season, because the bad play of the interior line prevented the QB from stepping up into the pocket AND Warner holding on to the ball for way too long. Ross is a somewhat decent OT - somewhat decent OTs in the NFL cannot hold their man for 5+ seconds.
