I know there's tons of talk over who we want to see Arizona go after, but how about the ones you DON'T want to see the Diamondbacks get?

I'm just going to name off a few.

1. Jason Schmidt

This guy seems to be one of the popular names of choice thrown around here as a "must get" guy.

In my opinion? He's the guy I most want to see the Snakes avoid. He's had a history of elbow and shoulder troubles.

Also, his win totals have dipped in each of the last two seasons, and at 33, there's really not a whole hell of a lot of room for growth.

He's going to command a ton of money, and frankly I really don't know if I want to see Arizona invest the money he's going to command on him.. I may be the only one on this forum who thinks this, but I just don't think he's worth it.

2. J.D. Drew

Injury prone.. Inconsistent.. Yep, two things I DON'T want in the Diamondback lineup.

Care to add any?

I wouldn't mind Schmidt if we could sign him to a two-year deal. However I'm sure he's looking for at least four and will probably get it. So that automatically goes out the window.

We don't have to worry about JD Drew that because we have too many OF's as it is so it would never happen. But of course we would never want him anyways - he is injury prone and overrated. Then again that sounds like a DBack right there. When are we bringing him in? ;)

I disagree with you on Schmidt but I can see why you have concerns. His wins have declined but that's the worst stat to go off of.

2003-
#1 in NL in ERA (2.34)
207 IP
208 K's 4th in NL
only 46 BB's

2004-
3.2 ERA 8th in NL
225 IP
251 K's 3rd in NL

2005-
4.4 ERA- not good at all
172 IP
165 K's
80 BB's- ouch

2006-
3.59 7th in NL
213 IP
180 K's
Gave up the third fewest hits of all pitcher with 200+ IP. Schimdt gave up 189 hits in 213 IP, Peavy gave up 187 hits in 202 IP, and Carlos Zambrano gave up 162 hits in 214 IP.

His arm problems are well documented and do carry concern but he shows no signs of wearing down. In fact, he's averaged 192 IP per season since the 2001 season. One concern I have is he walks a lot of batters- 80 last season which was the 8th most in the NL. IMO he's a dominant pitcher who has plenty left.

With you on JD Drew. He is a total Joe Jr. type signing and I'm pretty confident in saying that Byrnes will not go after him. He is an exact mold of Shawn Green. NO THANKS

2. Barry Zito- doesn't look like we're going after him anyways but I don't think he's a good fit here. He will give up a lot of home runs in Chase at a very expensive cost.

3. Westbrook and/or Pat Burrell- neither are good. Def not worth elite prospects.

I would not mind Westbrook. He is a decent #3 who would supplement the loss of Batista (not to mention he is getting paid next to nothing for a decent pitcher). While inconsistent, maybe he can learn something from Webb. However, if he costs us anything but middle tier prospects, then he is not worth it.

I highly doubt that the D'backs will get into a high spending battle for front of the rotation pitchers. I expect them to put a bid for Matsuzaka but they have no chance in competing for him. Zito would not do well here, in my opinion. He gives up too many fly-balls and is prone to walking alot of pitchers. I would love to have us pick up Mulder for cheap, since he is a sinker-baller but I expect him to sign with St. Louis.

Ted Lilly might be a nice pick-up, but he should not be expected to aid the rotation too much. More like a #4 starter.

Carlos Lee, I doubt the Dbacks will go after him because they feel they are set in the OF. However, the lure of HR power may be tempting to the front office. I hope they avoid him like the plague though, I believe he had more errors than OF assists last year. He is purely DH material.

Teams Interested In Rodrigo Lopez

Rodrigo Lopez is suddenly a hot property. The O's talked to at least five teams looking for starting pitching. The Brewers and Mariners have inquired specifically about Lopez.

Lopez will turn 31 later this month. He's a 200 inning back-rotation guy with good control; he probably belongs in the NL. He earned $3.75MM in 2006 and will be a free agent after the 2007 season.

Other Oriole tidbits from MLB.com's Spencer Fordin:

Baltimore met with Doug Melvin of the Brewers, presumably to discuss outfielders Kevin Mench and Geoff Jenkins. Chris Shelton could be another target.

Negotiations with Luis Gonzalez are ongoing; Jay Payton and Cliff Floyd seem unlikely.

Trade bait
Dec 4 - Rodrigo Lopez could be dealt by the Orioles, the Baltimore Sun reports. Five teams -- including the Diamondbacks, Brewers and Rockies -- have expressed interest in the right-hander, Baltimore's Opening Day starter three of the past four years.

- espn.com insider

BTW, they have the Dbacks name next to teams interested in Barry Zito. Caught me by surprise

Lopez is 31?? For some reason, I thought he was younger than that.

Scott Hairston for Lopez. :p

He's 31, is always injured, and sucks. He got demoted to the bullpen last season cause he's so bad, not my idea of a pitching upgrade through a trade. He's garbage, would rather have Vargas
