So why did Edge get benched?

And I mean benched. He didn't get one snap, at all. I am a little surprised at that; is he in the doghouse?

I understand starting Tim, but I don't understand why Edge didn't even sniff the field one time.

To be clear, once more. I understand and am in favor of why he didn't START. I'm wondering why he didn't get a snap at all.

I understand. He is slow and would have left to many yards on the field. He fumbles at the worst possible time and drops passes that are right in his hand.

Then he was complaining on top of it. I love it!

I think it's entirely because of the fumble that let Carolina back in the game last week. When I hear Whis on Doug and Wolf last Monday he wasn't upset at all about the running production, it's the turnovers that had him mad.

Shane, please see the last line.

I know why he didn't start. It was a good decision.

However, he was shut down completely. Has whis said anything about it? Are they pissed that he complained? Was this a statement to Edge?

Sometimes you have to make a subordinate understand they're not the alpha dog. Whisenhunt just took away Edge's toys for peeing on the carpet too many times. He was put in his place and told to shut up in the media. Plain and simple.

BTW Hightower and Arrington combined for 227 total yards of offense today. On top of that JJ had a 20 yard KO return.

EDIT: Wow, I just noticed that STL as a team had a total of 231 yards.

Oh crap I'm agreeing with Shane twice here! lol
Tim is on the 'up' and is hungry, Edge was good in the past but is slower and looks as if he just 'falls' forward' with not as much production anymore. JJ looked good yet again.
We might just have our formula!

I think Arrington has earned James' spot on the depth chart. I believe both Arrington and Hightower had runs in this game that were longer than any of James' carries since he came to Arizona.

Arrington is now the #2 runningback on the team. This was evident when Breaston was returning kicks, until Steve showed zero vision and they want back to JJ.

One would expect to see reasons given to the media.

Are they going to go back to him? Will he never play another snap in Phoenix?

A complete benching, with no explanations, is really weird to me.

I love it, regardless...I think Tim and JJ can be a wicked combination. But I am curious as to how long this doghouse stay is and why.

Maybe James made some comments internally and they sat him as punishment? JJ saw 3-5 plays a game as the 3rd back

exactly. he got benched for the same reason Shawn Alexander couldn't make a team for half of the season - because he's completely finished and has little to no value on the field.

Like Emmitt Smith was in Dallas, yet we help these old RBs extend their careers. (not anymore!)

Or maybe the coaches read Shzm13's "Official Bench Edge, Start Hightower Thread." :)

Really Do you really need to hear something from Whiz?? Seems to me the reasons are crystal clear and Whiz need not say anything to anyone...
James has sucked thus far this year... And, to cap it off, he's been crying to the media... In my book - that's a perfect formula that leads to the bench...

Yes, Whis is very clear with the media.

I can guess that stuff is why...I think the fumble was HUGE last week. But there is a big difference between losing your starting job and being demoted to 3rd string RB and not seeing one snap at all. BIG difference. Will that continue? Is he going to become a cancer?

I love the Hightower and JJ show. Love it. But moving a guy like Edge to basically no role at all on the team isn't the kind of move that you don't explain to the media. It's not like they benched Pope for Ben Patrick.

This is definitely the end of Edge in Arizona because this game proved that they can not only win but thrive without him. There is no reason at all now to keep his salary on the books. There's no question now as to whether he'll be a Cardinal next year.

The real question is: Why did it take so long?

I would venture to guess that Russ Grimm was tired of the fingers being pointed at the o-line as to why we couldn't run, and he lobbied Whiz for the change.

Don't get me wrong... for the most part, I think Edge has done about as well as any back could have with this team... UP TO THIS YEAR...
I have been claiming for weeks that any other back - namely Hightower, would have been exploiting what this o-line has been providing way more than 'ol man Edge has done. And what do ya know - Hightower gets the start and blows it up! This could have happened much earlier in the season of course, but I no Whiz was giving Edge the nod because of "who is WAS", and not because he showed he was the better back.
All that said, why can't Whiz bench Edge and not say anything about it (of course, the post-game commentary and Monday morning talk-show reporting has yet to occur)? Edge has not done anything here in AZ to warrant any special treatment whatsoever... And his bitching to the media was most likely all that Whiz needed to finally say enough...

AS it should be:

still think Edge has a place on the team this year, IF he can be a team player.

as a backup he would do for me. coming in late in games could do something. Also, he was a great back, someone that Timmy could learn a lot from.....but only if he does what is right for the team.

I think there's a couple factors involved.

1. James has been a starter in the NFL for a long time is #13 on the career rushing list.

2. Hightower wasn't a highly touted player coming out of college. Those guys usually get drafted in to a starting job before they actually earn it. He came in as a 5th round pick with no expectations, he wasn't supposed to become a starter for any team.

3. Continuing with that, it would be very risky to hand the starting job over to a rookie with not that many carries to evaluate, even if he has looked good in limited action.

4. He came out of a small college. He had a lot to learn and has far exceeded expectations. He had to learn a more complicated offense as well as pass blocking and other things that Edge has been doing for years.

I'm happy as hell with the result but I can't fault Whisenhunt for waiting to make the switch.
