COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball is one of the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament but is No. 2 overall.
The Gamecocks (30-3) will open March Madness against No. 16 Tennessee Tech on Friday at Colonial Life Arena. The other opening round game is between No. 8 Utah and No. 9 Indiana. The winners will play Sunday aiming to advance to the Birmingham 2 Regional.
Here's what you need to know about South Carolina's first March Madness matchup.
Tennessee Tech is 26-5 and finished 18-2 in Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles won the conference championship against Lindenwood in overtime.
Kim Rosamond has been coach of the Eagles since 2016. She was an assistant at Vanderbilt from 2007-16 and was on staff at Ole Miss from 1998-2003 after playing there for four years under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Van Chancellor.
The Eagles have some talented guards in Reghan Grimes and Keeley Carter who are averaging 12.9 and 12.3 points per game, respectively, but don't have a height advantage.
Freshman Megan Aulbert is the tallest player at 6-foot-2. South Carolina has five players 6-3 and taller. This may be a game where South Carolina coach Dawn Staley uses 6-4 Maryam Dauda to give her confidence-building minutes, especially if she can go to work against smaller post players. Dauda got some key minutes in the SEC quarterfinal against Oklahoma.
South Carolina 85, Tennessee Tech 52: It's difficult to bet against the Gamecocks, especially in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Paopao finishes with a team-high in her second to last game at home.
Tickets for the first round of NCAA tournament games in Colonial Life Arena can be purchased on StubHub.
As of Sunday night, tickets are starting at $69 and go up to $153 depending on the number of tickets and location of the seats.
