Sparano offered head coaching job with Dolphins

January 6 New Haven Register

"New Haven native Tony Sparano has been offered the head coaching position by the Miami Dolphins and will accept it at the conclusion of the Dallas Cowboys’ season, according to a source."

I don't think he can go after Haley because he has the title of OC with the Cards. Carthon is a RB coach. I don't think any RB coach is a huge loss. A guy can run the ball or he can't. The RB coach is more for blocking than running. Do you really think Carthon had one bit of an effect on Edge's game? JJ showed nothing again and Shipp probably regressed. Carthon may be a good coach but he's definitely replaceable.

I really don't know what effect Carthon had this year .. like you pointed out the RBs didn't show much beyond Edge ...

But with Haley I have read that the offensive players do like him .. but he didn't call the plays which is weird IMO .. maybe he has the potential to do so this year and he would be a loss for us ..

Yes, if they wanted Haley as head coach, they could have him, and the 'Girls could do nothing about it. You cannot block a coordinator from becoming a head coach. You can block an assistant from moving up in position to another team, but a HC move cannot be blocked.

I was talking about Sparano wanting Haley as an OC.

If that happens there will be no end to the Miami mafia references.

It doesn't matter. Unless the guy becomes a head coach somewhere else, we can hold all of our assistants to their contracts.

You are half correct. There is no rule what so ever that you have to let an assistant go if he will be promoted to head coach. They are under contract with the team and must get permission to leave or accept any position no matter what. The coaches do not have a union therefore the only rules in place for them is in terms of their contracts and their contracts only. It is a curtesy not a rule.

"All of the Cardinals assistants are under contract through at least 2008, meaning the Cardinals don't have to let them interview for other jobs."

From Somers latest blog. It also says that the Cards will not let any of their assistants go for anything but a head coaching job.

I was thinking Marty Shottenheimer would land that job. The owner loves him.

Atlanta should hire Marty Shottenheimer, they need a quick fix and cannot afford to take a chance on an unproven head coach.

Anybody who takes the Miami job is nuts. That is a total rebuild. The coach will, however, have QB Matt Ryan to build around and that's a good start.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if this article is true, then shouldn't the Dolphins be fined out the wazzo?

Tony Sparano is currently employed by Dallas who is in the playoffs. Miami can't talk to him at all about any coaching job until the Cowboys are eliminated from the playoffs, or win the Super Bowl. How is Miami not facing fines for this?

The new rules permit an interview during a playoff bye week.

Ron Rivera interviewed with the Cards during the playoffs last year.

You can talk during the first week of the playoffs. But you cannot give a job offer or sign any paper work. That has to wait until the team is out of the playoffs. Also this may bring up some Rooney Rule stuff becuase the Dolphins have not interviewed any minority canidates yet. Although nothing is signed yet if there is a wink wink deal in place this could cause problems for Miami. Especially since the group that enforces the Rooney Rule is mad at Miami for not interviewing any minority canidates for the GM job, even though the GM job doesnt fall under the Rooney Rule it doesnt make for any good will either. It will be interesting to follow this and see if Parcells first year already hits some turbulance.
