I don't know if anyone else does, but I really grow weary of clicking on spoiler buttons all the time, especially when some end up just being thumbs up and nothing spoiler related at all.

This is what I think:

TV Forum - No spoiler warnings needed. If you read the thread of a show AFTER it's aired, you run the risk of seeing spoilers. Don't read it if you don't want to know.

Movies Forum - Soilers should be used, since a movie is a one time event, unlike TV shows. Use them when you talk about a major plot point.

What do you guys think?

I'll add a poll about this to see what people think.

Mike

I don't like it. I watch TV shows after the fact, and still like to talk about the show in general--sometimes before I've seen the most recent ep.

i get your point, but there are times when i know that say, abomb, is watching a show on dvd and i don't know how far he is. so, i might say:

abomb, don't read this if you haven't watched "the first time" yet.

can you believe natalie spent the night with snake??? i always thought tootie would have been the first one to go "all the way."

As someone who is about six months behind the regular movie viewer, I like the spoiler feature. But, I can totally see your point, Mike.

I'm annoyed by something on the boards.

Mike

I'm not surprised. :D

BIM

Seriously - I own the first season of Veronica Mars. Still haven't watched it, but I know who "did it" because of the thread on here (pre-spoiler tag). Heck, Mike - you asked me to edit the thread. :D

You would have skipped the spoiler tags if they been there? You wouldn't have read them?

Because honestly, I don't know what a spoiler is. Your response to my post here, is exactly what happens in a lot of them.

Is it a spoiler, or is it a joke?

If I'm reading a thread about a show or movie, no--I won't read the spoiler.

Mike, you're really worried about clicking your mouse a couple of more times than you need to? We've got to get you in an excersize program.

I get tired of the spoiler tags in the Heroes thread.

If we are all guessing and offering opinions then that is not really a spoiler. Plus when i get email notification of a post I can see the spoilers anyway.
I guess I just don't know when spoiler tags should used. I agree they make sense for movies but basic discussion of an aired TV show doesn't make much sense to me.

With the advent of Tivo lots of people might be watching it days or weeks later. Some watch it on a DVD. Whats the difference between that and a movie?

If I haven't watched the episode I avoid the thread.

I guess I am just confused as to where the line is. Is someone's guess about what will happen next a spoiler? Maybe we should just spoiler every post or the entire thread.

In discussing a TV show that has already aired besides comments like "good episode" what isn't a spoiler?

In movies comments on the acting, cinematography, directing or whether or not we liked the movie are fine but with a TV show every new episode is a spoiler.

Shouldn't that line of thought extend to a movie, too? Why are spoiler tags okay in a movie thread, but not a TV show thread?

I'm sure we can rationalize all day for either side (I'm not trying to say the "no spoiler tags in TV threads" has no merit), but it really comes down to an extra mouse click, and I don't think that's so burdensome.

I don't mind the extra mouse click but it seems to me everything about any TV episode has become a spoiler.

The difference is movies are not ongoing installments they are one and done. We don't discuss or speculate the next part of the movie coming up next week which is the best part of discussing a current TV show IMO.

I just wish people would control thier use of the spoiler tag. No offense folks but some of ya use it just to hide a message, not to control leaking vital info about a show/movie. Appropriate use of the spoiler is a huge plus can't take it away.

The spoiler tag has it's legitimate uses, and is vital (IMHO) in avoiding a good deal of consternation.

It is abused, and overused, but is it really all that big of deal?

Not a big deal to most of us. If you don't like what you're reading when you click on the spoiler tags...don't click on them. If certain posters use them in a way you don't like...don't click on spoiler tags used by that poster. It's usually very obvious when it's being used to mask something which is clearly not a real "spoiler."

It's really a very trivial issue.

I see your point, Mike. I am hoping that the little gag of hididng smilies and whatnot in spoiler tags will soon run its course as it does get tiring, but other than that I think the spoiler feature is a good idea.

There are a ton of shows that I wait until the shows are on DVD before I watch them.

I absolutely love the spoiler tag and hope that it does not get removed. It looks like a ton of like the tag as well.

As far as I can tell, the problem with the tag is the abuse it gets by some of the more "playful" members who use it all the time, whether it has anything to do with a tv show/movie or not.

Well then, I'm sorry I brought it up.

Why? Obviously it bothers you enough to create a thread.

If others feel it is not a big deal you're suddenly sorry for bringing it up?

Last I checked - You're free to have your own opinion, just like Jason, Ken, and I have ours.

I like the tags.

I’m usually at least a week behind on The Office and Lost, but I still like to read what people are saying about them. Then I can go back and read the spoilers afterwards.
