If some team offers him something crazy...we don't save 1.4 million...we save 15 or 16 millions..or whatever their crazy offer is.

The transition tag is 13.6 million fully guaranteed, which is still more than DJ is worth!! If he wants to play one year under a tag and then bolt, it won't matter if its the franchise tag or the transition tag.

The point is he isn't getting either of those amounts from another team. He is going to see teams offering him 9-10 million per year max, and he is going to realize that he better come to the negotiating table with a more realistic number, or he needs to sign the tag and try his luck next year.

If someone wants to "poison pill" us for the 6th best FA LT in a weak class, then more power to them. We will move on and be just fine. The reality is it would be a reality check to a player that is massively over valuing himself.

1. Any saving, so to speak, must include replacement cost
2. You have no idea what he wants
3. You have no idea what is on offer
4. You have no idea what he's worth on the open market
5. One of the subjective 6 is a RT and 2 are 38 going into the season. Defacto of the L-T in or entering their prime, DJ is third on that list.

the transition tag says "id keep him for $13.6mm". Meaning: the team wants him back.

but the pragmatic issue is this: by the time another team makes him an offer to match, any replacement OTs are off the market. The Cards now must take a OT at #8 in the draft, half of which played RT not LT.

if the team wants him back: spend an extra $1.4mm and guarantee that he will be back.

Trans tag and F tag window opens well before free agency but after the combine.

By that time Humps agent will know what interest is out there. If Hump hasn't signed the tag by the time FA starts you have the option to sign someone else.

Here are the important offseason dates to know:

  • February 3: Waiver system begins. The Cardinals are No. 8 on the waiver priority list this offseason.
  • February 24-March 2: NFL Scouting Combine
  • February 25: First day teams can use franchise or transition tags. Perhaps the Cardinal use this on tackle D.J. Humphries.
  • March 10: Deadline to use franchise or transition tags.
  • March 16: “Legal tampering period” for free agency begins.
  • March 18: Free agency begins, new league year begins, trades can be made official. The Cardinals must have offered qualifying tenders to exclusive rights free agents and restricted free agents.
  • March 29-April 1: Annual League Meeting
  • April 17: Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets
  • April 20: Offseason program can begin for Cardinals
  • April 23-25: 2020 NFL Draft

Mark my words, DJ will get a fat contract..From us or another team, then fall back down to where he was before the contract year.

Lazy and/or hurt.
