Why I love Shaq
While all you guys are just waking up, I'm Monday night in China and still hooked on that great win against the Spurs that I listened to live at 3:30 am here in Nanchang. I don't know what ages most of you fellows are, but while you.re talking about Shaq, let me remind the guys over 30 about Shaq and the sports card business in the early 1990's. I had thousands of baseball and hockey cards that I would sell in L.A. every summer in the 80's. There were many sport card shows then, but only about 1% of the stuff was basketball cards, and they were old, big items at least 2 to 3 times larger than the regular sports cards. Then in the early '90's this awesome big kid came on the scene. Shaq! He tore down hoops and backboards--even at times the entire metal beams collapsed and the whole unit almost fell on him. He delayed games and the league banned swinging on the rim. Suddenly everybody in the world wanted a Shaq rookie card. And Orlando suddenly had thousands of new fans. Every card company started printing basketball cards. There were almost as many of them as baseball. Shaq may not be the best center of all time, and yet, he may be - given the difficulty of comparing apples and oranges--but one thing for sure, he has made more impact than all the rest of the centers together; and one other thing: HE'S OURS!!!
