If credible this report just makes it all the more important to accelerate his resigning....

----
Mike Martz
I contend he will work out an arrangement with the Lions. We'll discuss how Martz and Lions HC Rod Marinelli will alter the playoff course in the NFC. Again, I continue to state that Martz will work for the Lions in 2006!

Kurt Warner
I said it before, and will state again: If Mike Martz finalizes a deal Detroit as I suspect don't be remotely surprised if the Lions make a run after Warner. Should Warner pass on a return to Arizona... a Martz/Warner reunion will be attempted.

I'll bet Warner is clamoring to get back to the guy who bench him and cut him.

How Guys Sometimes Get the Story Wrong

I'm not saying the StL sportswriter (who is he/she by the way?) is totally off base, but it wouldn't surprise me if the writer heard something about "Lions Target Cardinal QB" and assumed it was Warner.

There's already been published speculation that Detroit is showing interest in Josh McCown. That would make more sense.

I'm thinking the writer may have made a giant assumption leap - but in the wrong direction.

We'd be in deep doo-doo without Warner. Realistic FA QBs, other than Kitna, look sparse. Makes me think that if Jay Cutler is there at #10, he might be a valid pick, if McGown goes elsewhere.

I doubt it will happen, but ideally, we'd have Warner as our #1, pick up an experienced backup veteran we can win with as our #2 and then draft a QBOF with a huge up-side to be our #3.

Whether our #3 turned out to be something like a Cutler, Croyle or Whitehurst or a more raw developmental type like McNeal or Omar Jacobs is for the scouts to decide - but by reserving #3 for a QB-in-Training, we'd have the option of drafting higher for one of the 3 - 5-ranked QB's or waiting a round or two to grab a more raw, athletic guy with more upside.

Note - I am not at all sold on Navarre as either our #2 or #3. (Litmus test for our #1 and #2 must be - Can we win with him? Litmus test for our #3 must be - Would we ever win with him? Navarre hasn't made the case for either yet. Can we afford to wait to find out whether he'll ever be good enough?)

Warner won't go to Detroit. He has warm weather, he has 273 kids, he has Boldin and Q whereas Detroit has Roy Williams and Bust..err..Charles Rogers. Martz isn't his favorite person and Brenda seems to not wanna move yet again...and we all know how vocal she can be about such things...lol

Just when can we sign Warner if we are going to? What is the date?

I never was good with dates (especially the blind ones - [rim shot]).

But I seem to recall that the free agent signing period starts somewhere around the beginning of March and the hope was that Warner's deal would be done before then.

We can sign him at any point.

But Warner will become free to contact others teams and other teams are free to contact Warner, March 3rd.

Cards are working the deal now. I think if Warner wants to test free agency then Denny will take the offer off the table and go to Plan B. That can be Kitna or a Brooks trade or some other trade. But I really think the deal will be worked and Warner will be here.

Correct me if I am wrong, didn't Martz turn down the OC job over money in Detroit?
Martz and Lions overcome snag, reach deal
NFL.com wire reports

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Feb. 8, 2006) -- The Detroit Lions hired Mike Martz after all.

The former Rams coach became Lions offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Feb. 8, a week after he turned down the job for financial reasons.

Martz interviewed with new coach Rod Marinelli and team president Matt Millen nine days ago, but said Feb. 2 he wasn't taking the job because, "It just didn't work out with the money."

Contract terms weren't disclosed.

The Rams fired Martz on Jan. 2, the day after St. Louis finished 6-10. He sat out the last 11 games recovering from endocarditis, a bacterial infection of a heart valve, but has been cleared to return to coaching.

Martz led St. Louis to the playoffs in four of his five full seasons, including a Super Bowl after the 2001 season, and helped the franchise win the 2000 Super Bowl as offensive coordinator. The Rams went 51-29 in the regular season and 54-33 overall during his five full seasons as head coach.

St. Louis ranked among the NFL's top 10 teams in total offense in six of the last seven years, ranking first from 1999-2001. The Rams' passing offense hasn't ranked below fifth in the league since 1999, and was also first from 1999-2001.

The 54-year-old Martz also interviewed for head coaching openings in New Orleans and Oakland.

His first NFL job was with the Los Angeles Rams as an offensive assistant in 1992-93 and was quarterbacks coach in 1994. He was wide receivers coach in 1995-96 after the franchise moved to St. Louis, and was quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins in 1997-98.

McCown will never play for Martz. Martz DEMANDS a highly accurate QB. Green, Bulger, and Kurt fit that bill, Josh does not.

I will be interested to see what Martz does in the way of a QB in Detroit.

BTW, his FIRST comment when he took over the Rams as OC was one in regards to Tony Banks, he said this to vermiel; "If you plan on keeping this guy, we are BOTH going to get fired..."

True story.

The writer is John Hadley, a St. Louis radio station personality (albeit a bad one.) He was also hired this past season by the Rams (by Martz himself) as his personal "media liason", so he was/is close to him. It wouldn't surprise me at all for Martz to covet Warner, since he's seen that he's not yet washed up.

Another poster stated that Warner hates Martz. It's been reported here that Martz and Warner still get along. I'm not sure Warner "hates" anyone.

I believe that either team is a good fit for Warner: indoors, the receivers, and similar offensive schemes (once Martz installs his system.)

I really can't see this happening. Not after Warner has gone on the NFL Network, ESPN, AZ republic etc and said that he wants to get a deal done and retire a Cardinal.

Warner may not hate Martz. But that doesn't mean he wants to work with him again, ether. And add to the fact that Warner has said over and over again that his family is settled in AZ. I just can't see this happening.

Like everyone else. I'm just going to put this down to baseless speculation on the writers part.

And Denny Green will go for Culpepper. Writers love to make the connection of coaches and past players, although it doesn't always happen that way.

Bingo...and to add to that list. DG will trade Q for Moss, go after Hovan, and trade for Bennett. It sounds to me like a reporter flinging the poo against the wall to see what sticks.

Not a lot of football news to report this time of year so why not make up some rumors. Additionally teams can't officially say who they are interested in as that would be tampering.

I would agree that McCown is likely off Detroit's short list what with Martz's hiring.
