Stadium Name??

Actually, the US Air sponsorship in DC was for the old Capital Centre in Landover. When the new downtown arena was built, it was called the MCI Center. Now it is known as the Verizon Center.

Would a unknown company benefit from acquiring the rights?

If you had never heard of a company before but it offerred a product you could potentially benefit from, would the fact that the Cardinal Stadium bore the company or product name make you curious enough to inquire about such a product?

Would it give that company's products more cachet with prospective customers, simply because they acquired the naming rights to an NFL Stadium?

I'm very interested, because I'm trying to determine the reaction to acquiring the naming rights to the marketing efforts of a great product that I represent.

The names rights for a stadium is not really about the selling of a actual product, but instead is usually about "Branding". Basicly it's getting your brand name out in the public on a major stage. The hope is your company starts getting viewed as a major player.

Oh course, my small company could never afford what the Cards would want. Hell, I couldn't even pay for my logo to be painted on the roof. But, If a small size company like mine, AntSports.com actually had the naming rights. All of a sudden, my company would not be viewed as super small potatoes, but instead, a possible player. So, later, if someone found their way to google and searched for Fantasy football. They see (sooner or later if they search really good) AntSports and think, oh, they sponsor the Cards stadium, let's look at their ad first. And, that all you really can ask for is the customer take a look at your offer. The rest is still your sell, but at least you get first crack at them.

So, everyone here at ASFN, go to http://www.AntSports.com and join/pay for a money league. I'll get rich and buy the naming rights.

I'll have to change my websites colors to Red and White.

But a lot of stadiums are named after companies that are already "major players". E.g., AT&T Park, Wells Fargo Arena, Staples Center, United Center, US Airways Arena, Delta Center, Nextel Cup.

I would love to see a paper on US stadium naming rights, their cost effectiveness against traditional advertising and their overall impact to a company, both in bottom line and public retention.

It's not just the US, though. All the English soccer teams have sponsor logos on their jerseys. Arsenal plays in Emirates stadium. Hell, they play for the Barclay's English Premier League and for the Carling Cup.

Personally, I don't think naming does anything for the company. Because of the ban of tobacco advertising, it was a while before I realized that the Winston Cup was actually related to Winston cigarrettes. Until I saw an outside shot of the United Center, I had no idea that it was United Airlines that sponsored the arena (I thought it was just a name to show that the fans are united.

And how can Delta or Monster possibly think that naming those stadiums help them? Do people know that it is Delta Airlines and not Delta faucets? Or that it is Monster Cables and not monster.com?

Isn't this situation special?

1) The most advanced stadium in the country

2) Relatively low rights fees (25 to 50 million for 10 years)

3) Huge exposure potential and media coverage ... not for a Coca Cola thats already known but for something few have heard of and everybody needs

4) This is the NFL .. the monster of sports marketing .. remember Viagra and Levitra ads with Ditka

5) Superbowls, Monday Night Games, aerial shots beamed around the world

Naming rights also serve as a demonstration of a particular company's prestige in a region. Phoenix is a stranger case than most because of the relative lack of corporate headquarters for a city of its size. America West/US Airways is a no-brainer. Beyond that? Phelps Dodge?

Good point! Wasn't Motorola based in Phoenix at one time? I think it must be a company that wants to gain name recognition to promote its products or services. Phelps is a mining company which I think limits the benefit. AW/USA already have sponsorship deal in Phoenix.

Still based in Chicago area,Dial Corp(the soap company)is HDQ in Scottsdale.
