Less than 24 hours ago, MLB lost one of it's greatest managers in Earl Weaver. Apparently, they wanted to bring a legendary hitter up to Heaven with him as Stan Musial passed away.

I am heart broken to hear of the passing of MLB legend Stan Musial. He was one of the greatest hitters of all time, a guy who made it look easy and most of all made it look fun out there. He was the greatest Cardinal of them all, and a man every generation could look up to. It's almost a sad irony he died one day after the 10 year anniversary of my grandfather's passing. Stan was my grandfather's favorite player. Before there were the Diamondbacks, I grew up a Cardinal fan because of my pap, being he played in their farm system and grew up himself a fan of the team.. Growing up a Cardinal fan, Musial was the legend I most looked up to, the one I grew up wanting to be like. Rest well Stan. You were the greatest. Baseball will never be the same without you.

Stan's stats were truly eye popping..

We're talking about a guy who carried a career OBP of .417. One who struck out an average of 31 times a season (mind you, now a days where 100 strikeouts is considered a GOOD year; you'll see players strike out 31 times in 2 weeks). He led the NL in EVERY MAJOR statistical category except homers (and he hit 475, so suffice to say, he wasn't a slap ball hitter). Stan Musial truly could do it all.

Before moving to Phoenix 35 years ago, I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in New Jersey (before they moved). The love and respect for Stan Musial at Ebbets field was amazing. More than any other visiting player I've ever seen. To this day (only in a batting cage occasionally), my lefty batting stance is that of Stan The Man.

No matter which National League team has been closest to where I've lived (the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Mets, the L.A. Dodgers or the D'backs), my favorite baseball player of all time is Stan Musial. A gentleman and a player who maximized his talents to become one of the best.

I got a kick out of reading that he memorized the speed of all the pitches of every pitcher he faced to improve his performance. It is not surprising. Thanks for the wonderful example, Stash. You will be missed by older (and younger) fans all over the country.

Damn. My girlfriend is actually a distant relative of his. Her grandfather was his 1st or 2nd cousin.

Anyone who has "The Man" on his tombstone and statues in front of stadiums lead an extraordinary life. Stan was the Ultimate Cardinal, top 5 player of all time and a great human being. He will be missed by Cardinal Nation.
