Now that the film is a go, the casting (and therefore the casting rumors) can begin in earnest. IGN is reporting that Paramount are in talks with Matt Damon, Adrian Brody and Gary Sinise to play ‘the big 3′ of Kirk, Spock and McCoy in Star Trek XI. Damon’s name was first mentioned last July when Marc Malkin of the Insider reported that Abrams was interested in the Oscar winner for James Kirk. Late last year Damon said he had not been approached, but would be interested if he liked the script. Brody and Sinise’s names have been suggested by many fans, but there had not previously beeny any reports connecting the actors to the production. IGN didn’t just stop with the big 3, they are also reporting that there may indeed be truth to the reports of James McAvoy playing Scotty and even threw in the name of Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim for Sulu. The IGN report also states that Damon’s talks are the farthest along.

IGN’s list is not far from the suggestions from TrekMovie.com and other sources from months ago and would signify a fairly significant budget for the film. The ages of the actors would also signify a film taking place primarily very close to the time of the Original Series (with the exception of McAvoy). TrekMovie.com has not been able to confirm IGN’s report with Paramount or any of the actors respective agents. It should be noted that two weeks ago ‘Stax’ of IGN reported the ’scoop’ that JJ Abrams ‘would only produce’ Star Trek XI.

I could really dig that cast.

I'm not thrilled about the writing team of Kurtzman/Orci. They've written for Alias and wrote the screenplay for MI III and Transformers. Big blockbusters, but nothing I would consider bearing the literary depth required to revive the social importance of Star Trek.

I know this started out at Rick Berman's next "last chance" to revive his career and Rodenberry Productions at Paramount. He drove the whole thing into the ground. At least JJ Abrams is now the de factor man in charge of ST franchise, just wish he could have brought someone like Damon Lindelof with him.

As for casting a prequel, the casting is bound to upset long-time fans no matter whom they choose. But if I were charged with casting a younger Kirk, I'd probably look away from the stars. I'd be tempted to lure Peter Saarsgard by telling him to make Kirk a bit darker and no one wants him to do a William Shatner impersonation.

Anton Yelchin in next 'Star Trek' film

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.J. Abrams is putting together his bridge crew for Paramount Pictures' 11th film in the Star Trek franchise. Russian-born Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog) is in negotiations to play Pavel Checkov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk.

Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain. Abrams, who will helm the untitled film, is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story line is believed to chronicle the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.

The film is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2008.

The character's involved in the storyline makes no sense in Star Trek canon!

Chekov in the Academy during the same time as Spock? Was Pavel a child prodigy, or was Spock a late bloomer? There about 30 years apart in age according to canon.

Even if it's the Academy portion of the film is shown in retrospect, and only involves Kirk and Spock, there's a 10 year difference there.

Star Trek fans will dismiss this if that's the case. A Trek film without Trekkies approval will fail in the box office. It's too late in the franchise to reinvent the wheel so to speak.

Do Vulcans age differently than Humans? Perhaps in Vulcan years, it equals out?

And why was the crew of the Enterprise left out of the Kumite? They were always "practicing" martial arts.

Vulcans long much longer than Humans, typically speaking. Their childhood development is the same, if not accelerated in a Vulcan's case.

Kirk > all others...no contest!

Yep, Kirk would get all crafty and figure out a way to conquer Li or Lee.

He would outfit them in red shirts and send them as part of a landing party to a newly discovered planet.

That was always one of my favorite episodes ("Arena"), my other favorite is the one when the Kirk has his duel with the Romulan Commander ("Balance of Terror").

Did you ever notice the the actor, Mark Leonard, who played Spocks father also played the Romulan Commander in that episode?

Mark Leonard also played the Klingon captain at the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
