Amidst a stretch of three losses in a row for the Dallas Stars, there has been room for plenty of panic to set in, but head coach Pete DeBoer has remained surprisingly calm and light-hearted given the circumstances around each loss.
A disappointing late loss to Pittsburgh, an overtime loss to Minnesota and a historic collapse against Vancouver has been filled with as much chaos as any team could want or need, but DeBoer has kept his team from putting too much stock into the misfortune leading by example.
"You're looking at a history-making coach," DeBoer said during a light-hearted press conference Friday.
Less than 24 hours earlier, his Dallas Stars made NHL history by allowing the fastest three goal comeback when Vancouver erased a 5-2 deficit in only 53 seconds, all coming in the final minute of regulation. The Canucks capped it off with an overtime winner from Kiefer Sherwood to send the Stars on a three-game skid.
While other coaches might be hitting the panic button with only four games remaining until the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin, DeBoer's demeanor is setting an example for the players to shake off all of the negativity and refocus for the final stretch.
When star defenseman Thomas Harley made a costly blunder that gave Pittsburgh a late go-ahead goal, DeBoer didn't lay any blame at Harley's feet and instead said that anyone with that much responsibility would eventually make a mistake or two.
DeBoer's leadership will help the Stars work through these late season struggles and come into the postseason with the right mentality for a grueling seven game series where it is inevitable that each team will face adversity and most likely suffer a tough loss along the way.
While fans might be pulling their hair out after what they witnessed Thursday night, the bench boss is setting a perfect example for his team to move past the three losses in a row.
The race for first place is still very much alive if the Stars can beat the Winnipeg Jets on home ice Thursday night.
