No more garbage time evaluation. Give him a chance to play a full game and answer the biggest question (or second biggest, behind head coach) this team has for the future.

The goal should be to win the Superbowl in 2006, not to go 8-8 in 2004.

McCown pisses me off. He threw to Q like twice and threw to Damien Anderson like 6 or 7 times. He did that the other time he got a good amount of playing time. He threw to McAddley a bunch instead of throwing to the starting players that were in.

But I agree put him in.

Why put him in? He is horrible.....terrible, pathetic, putrid and any other word you can think of to describe someone so bad.

You think 44-6 is bad? Let McCown play an entire game....sheesh. I understand these are dire times, but McCown was a Mac guy and Mac is gonna be given the boot, McCown needs to go too.

Draft Manning, sit him behind Blake for a year, or most of a year then hand him the reigns in 2005 and the following year we'll open the stadium with a star QB, star Reciever and stud running back.

Yup. Time to see what we have. But, we need to handle Blake properly, too. He's got an ego just like everyone else and we'll need him to bring along McCown or Eli or Ben R. or whoever is deemed to be the future (and that needs to be figured out this offseason). We don't want a disgruntled veteran QB on our hands.

I say start Blake and let him know that no matter what's happening in the game that McCown will be on the field for the second half for the rest of the season. Blake gets his PT and we get our evaluation.

If he goes down in flames, we (should) know what to do in April.
If he somehow plays well and improves, we hopefully can plan around him.

Either way, throwing him into complete blowouts is going to take years to evaluate him. He's athletic, yet we can't really take advantage of that if we play him from the pocket down by five touchdowns.

I agree we need to see him in a full game.

But what do I know, DC Cardsfan says that's nonsense, the coaching staff knows full well what he can do because of practice, the only people who "need" to see him play are the fans and our opinion doesn't matter.

Considering how few reps backup QB's get in the NFL during the season I would argue being promoted even for one start makes a big difference. 3 weeks ago SF fans wanted Ken Dorsey, not Tim Rattay, to replace Jeff Garcia, now they're all talking about what can we get for Garcia in trade so we can start Rattay.

The Cards need to find out once and for all what they have in McCown and the only way to do that is start him a few games. I think Blake is a much better QB but he's been around he knows the situation, if he'd played better and the team was 6-4 and not 3-7, this wouldn't be coming up. I believe ultimately we'll find out McCown is not the answer, but remember Atlanta thought that when they traded Favre and Green Bay wasn't all that high on Aaron Brooks when they traded him. Some guys don't show in practice what they do in games, I don't think McCown fits but the only way to be sure is to play him.

So I assume most of you watched the Cardinals vs. 49ers game. a few weeks ago..Garcia went out with the ankle injury..and Tim Rattay came in and played absolutely terrible... I think the 49ers pretty much punted every time he was in the game...he had the young qb deer in the headlights thing going on.

The past 2 weeks...he has been darn near perfect. Last night against the steelers...he had a great game.

I was down on Mccown - but we may as well give him a shot. Tim Rattay has played alot more qb than Mccown (college and pros) - and I am sure he is getting better teaching and has been in the league like 4 years - but we may as well let mccown play - you never know.

Russ - our resident bay area qb expert - can probably give us some more info on why rattay is playing so well..I know..two games do not make a season..and we shall see how he plays on the road...

The guy has had 2 games with significant playing time against SOFT defenses(a time where most QBs tear it up and pad stats meaninglessly) while the team was down by a ton......he has 0 TDs and 4 ints. The writing is on the wall, some of you refuse to read it. The guy is bad........Arena League bad.

6-44 bad?

Play him now. We might as well as move up the draft...all part of Grave's "Master" Plan.

See my post above. After that game the 49er fans were screaming for Dorsey, now they want Garcia traded so they can start Rattay next year.

Pittsburgh's pass defense stinks, any smart OC would know this and come out throwing the ball against them instead of waiting until late in the game. And the Rams secondary isn't that good either, but Rattay looked like a different person in a gameplan built on him and not on Garcia.

I don't think we'll see that with Josh, Rattay is a more experienced guy, but the only way to find out is to play Josh. I would probably start Josh Sunday so he gets a home game, then the Bears, and then decide about the last 4.

Unfortunately I think 44-6 would be considered a nail biter compared to what would happen with McCown at the helm for an entire game. Although, when the score is 28-0 in the first the opposing team may take pity on us and just kneel down for the rest of the game when they have the ball........lord knows with McCown back there they will be getting the ball alot.

I tend to think you're right but to be fair would anybody here design the same gameplan for Josh we do for Jeff? I'd want to use his legs more for one thing.

Give him 2 starts in a system designed for him.

The only way you don't do that is if you know for a fact that doing so is a major morale problem for the team. In other words if the team thinks Josh stinks, then starting him is seen as a we give up, and you can't do that.

I kind of think that's what happened last year Mac knew how raw he was and that benching Jake would be seen as submission by the team.Which is why it was so dumb having 2 rookies backup Jake last year.

Are you kidding? Our coaching staff had 80ish games with Plummer and never designed a system for his strengths. Even if McCown had a lick of talent and slightly belonged in the NFL our coaches wouldn't change a thing.

We have a great deep ball QB right now.....how often do we go deep? Exactly.

Gameplan not system.

In other words we play the Rams Sunday, they have a weak secondary, they have Little out, so let'd design some stuff that utilizes Josh's legs since he's faster than Jeff. Not saying totally revamp the system, just put in some plays for him that we think will help him out a bit.

That's precisely what the 49ers have done you notice they aren't running QB draws or moving the pocket nearly as much with Rattay, it's because that's not what he does well.

I don't for a minute think Rattay is as good as he looked last night but there's something to be said for putting a guy in HIS gameplan.

If Josh bombs as I suspect he will at least we won't have the start Josh over Blake stuff, then it will be time for start Parsons!

I firmly believe Jeff is our starter opening day next year unless the Colts let Peyton become a FA which I don't see happening.

peyton wouldnt play for the cards and i would say this year will make it impossible to get any quality fas in the future. the oline is a big disapointment to me. if favre had played behind them, he would have already retired.

I say start McCown, if for no other reason than that gives Parsons a sure shot at some playing time.

McCown doesn't look like he feels he belongs out on the field. Parsons has teased us for the past two preseasons - I say give this kid some gametime and decide if he's worth keeping around or not.
